Supersize serving of real-life cinema, 17 October 2011
Author: evening1 from New York City

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

Morgan Spurlock has created a wonderful documentary in itself with this road trip through superior non-fiction film.

Introducing his topic as a bridge between journalism and art, the director of "Supersize Me" -- one of this peer-reviewed list's top 10 -- is a genial, enthusiastic, and ambitious guide.

Not only do we learn about and recall superb documentaries, but we get to catch up with some of the fascinating protagonists of these films, learn how some of the stories turned out, and generally marvel at how truth can be so much stranger than made-up stuff.

We schmooze with Spurlock as he winds down country roads, orders pie in diners, and drops into an eye-popping Pittsburgh "vogue" inspired by the classic film "Paris is Burning."

A few of the featured documentaries seem a bit lame -- like Madonna's paean to herself -- but these are in the minority. Clips from films like "March of the Penguins," "Little Dieter Learns to Fly," "Paragraph 175," and "Murderball" leave one itching to get to the video store or maybe go back to Netflix.

I learned a lot from catching this on Current and now have a list of to-see films posted on my fridge. The low-profile cable channel is showing one of the 50, "The King of Kong," this week. Can't wait to watch it with my boys.
