Another educational short film from the Coronet Institution designed to bright the youth minds of the 1950's, this one is designed to talk about Communism, presenting a brief and biased view of the URSS political/economical/social system back then. Of the few projects I've seen from Coronet this one was slightly interesting and better presented than the majority of the corny films they did. However, this one doesn't escape the lame factor. Wronged in so many ways that it has to be seen so you can believe what's it all about.
McCarthy era was the main thing in the States during that particular year, HUAAC vs. the Red scare was all around and this short film came to enlighten the hearts and minds of the American student. Where and how Communism began? What's their deals? What do they preach and what do they really go for? Forget about conservatism or liberalism...I'm talking about presenting an unbiased view of something different than what most people know as a reality. But time and again we see valid and real points about the true reality of URSS back in the time of Stalin - only touching the surface because they'd have to wait a few years to read how worst it was the people's life living in poverty, hunger and with oppositors murders or long prison terms all around in that Solzhenitsyn's book "The Gulag Archipelago". I'm fine with that. But focusing on Soviet Union's arms race as a threat when U.S. did the same at the very same time is just nuts. Not to mention...not even Lenin's name they get it right (they keep calling him Nicolau Lenin!).
But I challenge you. To everything that's presented here I urge you (if you see it later on despite my thumb down) to trade the elements. Because most of what's here in the terms of criticism of the socialism system is something the capitalism would want to have, in mind, but they don't do it because money interferes it, you gotta have the profit. But mostly of what was shown bears an awful and accurate similarity with the capitalism system; however the Marx/Lenin/Stalin system (in fact, created by a Brit by the name of Thomas More...yes, that great man from "A Man for All Seasons" wrote a book way back in time about a similar system) seems more inclined to join making instead of pushing them apart in endless competition - though it just doesn't work except in a perfect society. Subvert the idea of Communism to Capitalism and you get something close and wrong with this film.
Consisting of historical images, "Communism" was relatively manageable. Easy to watch, but hard to accept. It just doesn't work as a criticism. I've seen better out there, even from fiction. Specially with fiction. 5/10
