Although the characters are based on a children's book by Judi Barrett—Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which is followed by Pickles to Pittsburgh released in 2000. The only noticeable story element between this movie and Pickles to Pittsburgh is a return to the island after the previous big food disaster.

Some but not all of the food-animal's were given names during the film, some that were either heard or seen include Cheese Spider, Shrimpanzee, Hippotatoes, Melonphant, Subwhale, Banana Ostriches, Flamangos, Jelly-fish, and Tacodiles.
