Storyline

Based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth; the story follows twenty-two year old Jenny, who in 1957 leaves her comfortable home to become a midwife in London's East End slums. She expects to find a hospital, and is surprised to find that the clinic is a convent: Nonnatus House. Working alongside her fellow nurses and the medically-trained nuns, Jenny has her eyes opened to the harsh living conditions. But she also discovers the warm hearts and the bravery of the mothers; each one a heroine in Jenny's eyes. Written by L. Hamre

Trivia

Long before Jennifer Worth's memoirs were filmed, she spotted Miranda Hart and knew that she would be perfect to play Chummy Browne, the six-foot-tall, ungainly, clumsy midwife who features in her books. Miranda agreed to take the role of Chummy if the books were ever filmed. See more »

Love Call the Midwife
25 January 2015 | by (Pennsylvania,USA) – See all my reviews

Call the Midwife is one of the best BBC programs I have watched and I have seen many. The acting is superb, the stories are well written. There is always something going on which affects almost every member of the cast in each episode. It is a story that goes in many directions but then comes together at the end.

Truth be told, I think it is a program that will attract more women than men simply because of the topic dealt with in every program. There is always at least one birth and they are filmed in such a way as to be very believable without being graphic,as we know they are not a real birth. Watching it,however, makes you believe it is. Well done BBC. I love it!
