Movie Review – Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok, 2017

Directed by Taika Waititi

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel House, Taika Waititi

Synopsis:

Imprisoned, the mighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization.

It’s been a bumper 2017 for Marvel Studios, with two huge hits on their hands already with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming (though the latter was mostly Sony), and they’re rounding off the year with another trip to Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. The third in the Thor franchise (and possibly last) is one of our final stops before we reach Avengers: Infinity War – but is it worth getting off at?

Thor finds himself in a bit of a bind. »

Film Review: ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Hey, comicbook fans, it’s another Thor movie, and that can only mean one thing: It’s almost time for another Avengers movie! While you wait, Disney and Marvel Studios hope to loot another half-billion dollars or so from the world’s wallets with this outlandish amuse bouche featuring the God of Thunder and his Abs of Steel, with yet another confusing plot crudely bastardized from Norse mythology in which most of the action takes place on a parallel world you care nothing about.

Like Thor’s two previous solo outings (definite low points in the Marvel oeuvre), this one is pretty much skippable, although it’s not without its pleasures — most notably, the fact that Thor’s not so solo this time around, with cameos/co-starring opportunities for the Hulk, Doctor Strange and a few leftover bits of Tony Stark’s wardrobe (including a retro Duran Duran T-shirt that’s good for a laugh). And while it »

Toronto Film Review: Shia Labeouf in ‘Borg/McEnroe’

7 September 2017 4:23 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Borg McEnroe” is the story of one of the great tennis rivalries of all time, between Swedish efficiency expert Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and explosive American underdog John McEnroe (Shia Labeouf), as defending champion Borg competes for his record-breaking fifth Wimbledon title. But it also is the backstory of one of the great tennis friendships, and for someone like me who knew nothing about the match in question (and cared less about who won), that twist — revealed practically in overtime, after the film has effectively ended — made me want to go right back in and watch the movie a second time.

As in competing tennis picture “The Battle of the Sexes” (which seems a far more commercial prospect, in the U.S. at least, given its added political dimension and likable lead actors), director Janus Metz’s stylish, Scandi-made behind-the-scenes sports movie builds to an extended on-court showdown — in this case, a virtuoso, »

Lead Actor Emmy Contenders Like Riz Ahmed, Sterling K. Brown Juggle Busy Schedules

3 August 2017 10:50 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With more content comes more opportunity and for some actors a busier schedule than ever.

Lead actor nominees Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) and Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”) also scored guest actor Emmy nominations for roles in HBO’s “Girls” this Emmy season.

Nominated in the limited series category, Ahmed describes himself as a workaholic who prefers to keep busy. That helps explain his parts in multiple projects released in 2016, including “The Oa,” “Jason Bourne” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

“If I’m not shooting something I will be writing a script or recording music,” he says. “I love to be in the thick of the creative process. It’s addictive.”

Sterling K. Brown, last year’s supporting actor in a limited series winner for FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” has also stayed busy. He’s nominated for lead actor in a drama series for NBC’s “This Is Us,” and »

Brace yourself for a wave of CGI explosion as new Geostorm trailer arrives

Independence Day scribe, Dean Devlin, makes his directorial debut in the forthcoming disaster movie, Geostorm. And to give us a further taste of what to expect another trailer has just dropped.

Related: Geostorm first trailer.

The new trailer gives us another impressive look at the visual wonderment of CGI in creating a world under threat by natural forces that can’t and shouldn’t be controlled by manmade machines and Gerard Butler’s race against time, yet again, to save the world from impending danger.

It’s funny how life sometimes imitates art, anyone would think Donald Trump may have gotten hold of the script for Geostorm in which satellites are built to control global climate change and took it quite literally, tweaked it a little for his own mind to digest when he boldly stated climate change wasn’t caused by humans.

Geostorm has a cast that includes Gerard Butler, »

Love story “Breathe,” Andy Serkis’ directorial debut, is set to open the BFI London Film Festival with its European premiere.

The “Lord of the Rings” actor’s production company The Imaginarium made the movie, which is based on the story of Imaginarium co-founder Jonathan Cavendish’s parents. Both stars, Serkis, and Jonathan Cavendish will be at the premiere at London’s Odeon Leicester Square on Oct. 4, and the film will play simultaneously in cinemas across the U.K. ahead of its Oct. 27 general release in the country by Stx International.
