Danny Mooney who is better known for acting (The Ides of March) than directing, has given us a well put together film with two well known actors, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) and the beautiful Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), as the main leads. I just reviewed 'Ginger and Rosa' which is similar to this in a lot of ways and I enjoyed both films immensely. It's about two soldiers who are buddies, Mickey and Peter and while about to go on leave Peter get's a letter from his girlfriend, Juniper, who is played by the sexy Aimee Teegarden (Scream 4) in which she is breaking up with him. Chris Lowell (The Help) plays Peter and together with Mickey they fly off home to try to win back Juniper's heart. Mickey meets Candace (Teresa Palmer) and falls head over heels in love with her and things get very interesting.
This is hardly an original story but it's back-story is cleverly weaved into the film to help get the message of love and emotional maturity within relationships across. I think I saw a film that also had the first moon landing as a back-story but I can't remember it's name. When we see the scenes that are set in Vietnam Danny Mooney used some very clever techniques to give the illusion of jungle warfare without having to throw money at it and it was effective.
On the surface this appears to be a simple love story but it's way more than that and it's been told well. Rock solid acting, directing and production made this a pleasure to watch and while it's a bit cheesy it's very entertaining and has the bonus of Teresa Palmer for us guys and Liam Hemsworth for the ladies.
Highly Recommended
