Attack the Block could be back as a sequel or Us remake, says director

Joe Cornish is considering sequel, American remake and TV spin-off ideas for his sci-fi hit about London teens battling aliens

Attack the Block director Joe Cornish has suggested that his aliens v adolescents sci-fi drama could get a sequel, an American remake and/or a TV spin-off.

Cornish, who was speaking to IFC News at last week's New York Comic-Con, said that he had already received a number of ideas for a potential sequel from Attack the Block's star, John Boyega, who plays Moses, leader to a group of London teens who repel an alien invasion.

"He has this image of a bigger alien attack on London, as if the attack we saw in Attack the Block was just the [first] wave and there's another wave of bigger creatures," Cornish said. "He had an image of Moses on a police horse. So he's on a horse leading this army of »

Nycc: Believe It Bruv, 'Attack The Block' Comes To New York

15 October 2011 11:05 AM, PDT | Filmology | See recent Filmology news »

While some people were already gathering in line for the Avengers panel that will happen later today, others chose the slightly less crowded but just as excitable Attack the Block panel with writer/director Joe Cornish and stars John Boyega and Luke Treadaway. Attack the Block, if you were unaware, is one of the best action films this summer and it's currently on its way to be a cult hit for generations to come.

Joe Cornish's boyish excitement relaxed the atmosphere, bringing the panel into more of a conversation among friends rather than an artist lecturing pupils on his talent. It definitely could have gone that way though- I suspect that Cornish is on his way to becoming a cult director (he just wrote Adventures of Tin Tin which opens later this year). He easily joked about the technical difficulties that the room was having; poor microphones, misplaced clips, »

Attack The Block’s John Boyega Hits Spike Lee Boxing Drama

3 September 2011 10:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Having negotiated the treacherous waters of getting approval for his pilot episode, Spike Lee has now started casting a new boxing drama that he is producing and directing for HBO. Set in Newark, New Jersey, Da Brick is all about a young man who is released from juvenile detention on his 18th birthday and tries to find himself and his place amidst those around him.

That 18 year old, Donnie, will be played by John Boyega, hot-as-you-like off the back of his charismatic performance as Moses in Attack the Block, which after great reviews in the UK is starting to get real word-of-mouth traction in the Us as well. Also cast are Milauna Jemai (FlashForward) as Donnie’s mother and Julito McCullum (The Wire’s Namond Brice) as his best friend Kevin.

Mike Tyson is on board as an executive producer, with the show said to be drawing on elements of »

Casting Bits: ‘Attack the Block’ Star in HBO’s ‘Da Brick’, Rachel Boston in ‘It’s a Disaster’, Harry Lloyd in ‘Closer to the Moon’

1 September 2011 2:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] If you happened to catch a screening of Attack the Block this summer, you probably walked away thinking the same thing we did: this John Boyega kid is going to be a huge star. Well, Boyega's now landed his first part since Attack the Block opened, and it sounds like a great one. He'll play the lead, Donnie, in HBO's series Da Brick, a fictionalized telling of the earliest days of Mike Tyson's boxing career. Spike Lee is set to direct the pilot episode from a script by John Ridley (Three Kings), and will also executive produce along with Tyson, Ridley, Jim Lefkowitz, and Entourage creator Doug Ellin. Da Brick centers around a young man in modern-day Newark, NJ who gets released from juvenile detention on his 18th birthday. The series will aim to deal with larger issues like "what it means to be a young, black man in »

‘Attack the Block’ Star John Boyega Tapped by Spike Lee for ‘Da Brick’

1 September 2011 11:07 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A year ago, John Boyega was a name that nobody knew. And, okay, it’s probably still a name that a lot of people aren’t familiar with. But if the hype he’s been getting from film critics for his starring role in this summer’s Attack the Block is any indication, Boyega won’t be able to enjoy anonymity for very much longer. Attack the Block director Joe Cornish found Boyega performing in a small stage show in London and cast him in his hoods versus aliens monster movie based on that. One to take his work seriously, first-time film actor Boyega then took to studying season 4 of The Wire to get a handle on how to approach playing an urban youth, and brought reality to the character of Moses, in a performance that felt genuine and raw even when there was tons of alien monster insanity going on around it. 'Attack the Block' Star John Boyega is Spike Lee's Next Leading Man

1 September 2011 9:45 AM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

We're well aware that you're probably tired of hearing about Attack the Block by now.  This resourceful, fierce British sci-fi flick has been on the tip of every movie blog's tongue for the better part of 2011, but unfortunately a tepid response at the Us box office means it hasn't expanded wide enough for most people to catch it.  But don't worry, this post isn't here to heap even more praise on Joe Cornish's flick.  It's here to heap even more praise on its star, John Boyega! Boyega has just been cast in the lead role in Da Brick, a potential new HBO series produced by Spike Lee.  The show will find Boyega playing Donnie, an 18-year-old man who is trying to get by as a "young, black man in a supposedly post-racial...

'Lone Ranger': Disney Wants Johnny Depp, He Wants Gore Verbinski

1 September 2011 9:38 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Disney's dance with "The Lone Ranger" just keeps getting trickier.

Deadline reports that Disney must accept the $215 million-ish budget that director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are presenting, or move forward without Verbinski... and, by extension, without Johnny Depp, who reportedly won't shoot the film without Verbinski behind the camera. Disney originally pulled the plug on "The Lone Ranger" because the budget got a bit too out of control, though last we heard they were negotiating. We'll keep you posted with further updates as soon as we have them.

Da Brick: Spike Lee takes on Mike Tyson

The director is to film a pilot of the boxer's life for HBO. What other sports stars' stories would make good TV?

American premium cable channel HBO has commissioned film director Spike Lee to make a pilot for a series based on the life of heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.

Da Brick will reflect aspects of Tyson's New Jersey upbringing and early career and is said to be a boxing equivalent to Entourage, whose creator Doug Ellin is also involved in the project. South London newcomer John Boyega, whose only previous role was as Moses in Joe Cornish's Attack the Block, has been cast as the main character.

A boxing drama is a good fit for HBO, which built its audience on world-title fights going as far back as 1975, when the channel screened the Ali v Frazier "Thrilla In Manilla" via satellite in the Us. It does however beg »

HBO Picks Up Mike Tyson Boxing Drama Da Brick, Attack the Block’s John Boyega to Star

1 September 2011 7:49 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

After a cameo in The Hangover brought Mike Tyson back into the public eye a couple of years ago, his new career in showbiz is now "flourishing" with a reality TV show on Animal Planet and co-hosting duties for Comedy Central's roast of Charlie Sheen. But more importantly, he is currently setting up a boxing drama for TV with the help of Spike Lee and Entourage creator Doug Ellin. This week it was announced that HBO has ordered a pilot for the project, which is going under the title Da Brick (a reference to the Newark, NJ setting, which is also known as The Brick City). They've also already found a lead for the show in John Boyega, the star of Joe Cornish's breakout hit Attack the Block. Count me in. Tyson appeared on an episode of Entourage back in 2010, and at the time he told Doug Ellin »

Spike Lee casts “Attack the Block” star in HBO drama

By Sean O’Connell

Hollywoodnews.com: That was fast. In our story yesterday reporting Spike Lee’s deal with HBO to shoot a pilot surrounding Mike Tyson’s early days, we wondered who the director would cast as the savage heavyweight fighter.

The answer is John Boyega.

Currently starring in “Attack the Block,” Boyega has been cast as Donnie, a former juvenile delinquent who embarks on a personal journey toward redemption, THR reports. The character is based loosely on Tyson, though his name on the show (and the name of the show, itself) will be “Da Brick.”

THR adds that Milauna Jemai (“NCIS”), Julito McCullum (“The Wire”) and Kamahl Naiqui Palmer (“Gossip Girl”) also have been cast in the show, which is being described as “a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in a supposedly post-racial America.” Lee will direct the pilot, while “L.A.
