Can't be too sure but heard this is a remake and sequel to a TV movie that had good reception.
Story is about a class in the police academy as trained by a newly transferred homicide investigator. There are typical harsh reality training brought on by the teacher, and the typical mixture of rebellious, straight, skinny, fat, older ..etc students.
And of course there are plenty of back stories and connections that ties everything together. Even though it's kind of formulaic it's enjoyable nevertheless.
The only really tense moment comes near the end on the stand-off. In a sense, for me, the focus was a bit divided on 2 main students, the teacher, and his wife. That together with the limited episodes hurts the depth a bit.
