Deft handling of complicated subject matter

Carla succeeds in its depiction of complex characters living lives than many of us never stop to otherwise consider. Terrific acting efforts turned in by Joslyn DeFreece, Laverne Cox and Mark Margolis bring to light the struggles and perseverance of individuals facing challenging circumstances. The subtleties of Eli Hershko's direction makes these characters accessible and is key to advancing the story line. Carla retains a notable sense of authenticity throughout and is a superbly crafted, elements which are often times lacking in other smaller budget productions. This film is bolstered by a keen sense of cinematography and pacing that will draw you in. See it.

Excellent, real, well acted, and ultimately true to itself and the audience.

Randall Crane already put it well in their review below.

Excellent film Only a few minor issues: -An unnecessary minor loss of subtlety at the very end (literally the last second of the last scene, so very minor) -The brother seems a bit over the top. Although I have witnessed brothers who act terribly in similar circumstances, and the final scene with the brother is well handled.

-the boyfriends acting falters at times

Otherwise, excellent acting by all. And by comparison, most films of this nature, and this budget, have a plethora of issues. 3 minor ones are almost not worth mentioning.
