A great episode if it wasn't for some plot contrivances.

This was another strong episode with surprising maturity from this series. Unfortunately it is let down a little by some annoying convenient moments. So when Hal and Kilowog leave the prison planet an inmate CONVENIENTLY happens to escape the prison nobody has ever escaped? They happen to catch him, so he reveals everything. When they go to the prison to investigate I like how their rings are weakened by the yellow rocks, but we know the main characters wouldn't be killed. It's just convenient that they would survive. Of course Aya is somehow able to go into the prison and whenever Razer is isn't blocked by the yellow rocks. What saves this episode for me is the maturity with Razer's origin, where he was too late to save what seems like his wife, and the fact that there's a prison that tortures people in a children's animated show. Aya and Razer are well developed for this episode setting up for later. The only thing I'd wish to see were Kilowog's and Hal's memory from the torture machine, which could've helped build their character a little more, but it wasn't necessary. Overall a good episode, I just hope that the rest of the series isn't overly contrived and ruined by too many convenient moments.
