Official Oscar® Entry from Syria: ‘Little Gandhi’ in Best Foreign Language Film Category

Official Oscar® Entry from Syria: ‘Little Gandhi’ in Best Foreign Language Film Category
Syria’s first ever submission in the Motion Picture Academy’s Foreign Language category, “Little Gandhi”, is one of a handful of documentaries submitted for Best Foreign Language Film nomination this year.

It comes to the Academy in a most unusual way. It was selected not by the country which is how submissions are always made, but by a committee of artists in exile. If any of these people had actually been in Syria they would likely have been imprisoned, tortured and executed, for this was the fate of Ghiyath Matar, the Syrian activist who became known for giving flowers and roses to army soldiers in his home town of Daraya, leader of the once peaceful Syrian revolution and the Little Gandhi of the title. It premiered at the ongoing Asian World Film Festival.

I have yet to see the documentary submission for Academy Award® nomination entitled Syria Hell on Earth: The Fall of Syria and the Rise of Isis

DVD & Digital Release Date: Feb. 11, 2014

Price: DVD $22.99

Studio: Sony

Agnes Bruckner is Anna Nicole

Agnes Bruckner (TV’s Private Practice, The Citizen) stars as the late sex symbol Anna Nicole Smith in the cunningly titled made-for-tv biographical drama Anna Nicole.

The pneumatic Anna Nicole Smith was a modern-day Marilyn Monroe whose meteoric rise to fame took her from being a single mother in Texas to Playboy’s Playmate of the Year, international supermodel, actress, and reality television personality. But her sudden catapult to fame came with a price, as drugs, alcohol and reckless behavior led her down a path that ultimately resulted in her tragic death.

Directed by Mary Harron, written by John Rice and Joe Batteer, and co-starring Martin Landau (Cleopatra), Adam Goldberg (Untitled) Cary Elwes (No Strings Attached), and Virginia Madsen (Dune), Anna Nicole was produced by Sony Pictures Television and aired on The Lifetime Channel in June,

Thoughtful & Intriguing Trailer For ‘The Citizen’

Thn would like to introduce and share the trailer for The Citizen, a story that revolves around an Arab man who emigrates into New York on September 10th, 2001. Although this could be said to be a controversial movie, it looks more to play on the paranoia and lack of the ‘bigger picture’ of the situation as lead character Ibraham (Khaled Nabawy) as he’s caught up in the fall out of Twin Towers desperation.

I think The Citizen looks brave to question how people react, and what happens under extreme pressures and prejudices. Check out the trailer below for the film directed by Sam Kadi in his first feature and currently on a limited release in the USA. I suspect there may be more worldwide release dates to follow:

The Citizen also co-stars Cary Elwes, Agnes Bruckner, Rizwan Manji and William Atherton.

'The Citizen' review: Khaled Nabawy stars in what may be the most boring 9/11 movie ever

  • Pop2it
The bar has been raised in the "uplifting" immigration drama just enough that you've got to try harder and show more than "This worthy soul from Norway / Guatemala / Vietnam / Albania went through X, Y and Z to get to this country." That tale is tired.

So "The Citizen" throws us this curve ball. Suppose the kindhearted, handsome foreigner who only wants the chance for a better life in America is a Muslim from Lebanon. Suppose the day he gets into the country, thanks to its then-lax "green card lottery" rules, is Sept. 10, 2001. How might that complicate a fairly cut-and-dried storyline?

Not enough.

Egyptian star Khaled Nabawy is Ibrahim Jarrah, who tells a little white lie to the customs guy as he hopefully shows off his green card application and enters the United States. His cousin was to meet him at the airport, but doesn't. No worries.

Within hours, he's made
