Locked-room mysteries don't get much more fiendish than the one at the heart of The Invisible Guest (Contratiempo), the new film by Spanish writer/director Oriol Paulo (The Body). Even better, that's just the starting point for an increasingly potent thriller. High-powered businessman Adrián Doria (Mario Casas) stands accused of murdering his lover in the aforementioned locked room. Complicating things still further, he's well known and also married, or at least he was until his wife learned of his arrest and the circumstances surrounding it. She departed from Adrián post-haste, with their young daughter in tow. He's already been convicted in the court of public opinion, but things are about to get even worse. Kicking off the latest incarnation of the Austin, Texas based genre bending film festival Fantastic Fest, fans got to witness the intense and powerhouse crime thriller The Invisible Guest from Spain. As nervous laughs weaved through the theater, the audience was shown great respect by the project as a whole with smart execution, pinpoint timing and just like that fantasy of whichever girl or guy we coven, there is so much more underneath that goes to places we never dreamed of. The film opens with a murder that has happened during a payoff to keep quiet a terrible secret and the events that happen on a back stretch of road. As the police break into the room and see a man over his former lover’s dead body, we meet Adrian, an individual who denies the accusations that he did any of this and claims a mysterious man was in the hotel room. »

Madrid — Three much-anticipated Spanish titles — “At The End of the Tunnel,” “Boy Missing” and “The Chosen” — will play at the 10th Spanish Screenings-Madrid de Cine, Spanish cinema’s annual international market. “Boy Missing” and “At the End of the Tunnel” are Hollywood studio releases in Spain.
Unspooling June 27-29, the Spanish Screenings are Spain’s equivalent of UniFrance’s mid-January Rendez-Vous with French Cinema and the U.K.’s London Screenings. They also serve to debate the state of the industry and underscore its key trends.
One seems obvious at this year’s meet: an appetite for thrillers. From the turn of the century, Spain carved out a reputation for horror movies, such as [“Rec”] or “The Orphanage,” which broke out to substantial box office in Spain and abroad. This year, it is thrillers, not chillers or gore, which predominate on the slates of Spain’s top international sales houses.

Madrid — Sony Pictures Releasing has set an Aug. 19 release date in Spain for “Boy Missing” (“Secuestro”), the latest suspense thriller from Barcelona-based Rodar y Rodar, producers of “The Orphanage,” “Julia’s Eyes” and “The Body,” three of Spain’s highest-profile psychological thrillers of the last decade.
The sales agent of “Wild Tales” and “The Clan,” Vicente Canales’ Film Factory has acquired internationals sales rights to “Boy Missing,” reflecting a common practice in Spain, where a Hollywood studio handles domestic distribution in the country and a sales agent handles international sales.
Public broadcaster Rtve, pay TV operator Movistar Plus, regional TV network Televisio de Catalunya and cable net Cosmopolitan TV share TV rights in Spain in a strong show of local TV interest in the title.
