Mary McDonnell on ‘Major Crimes’ Finale: ‘I’ve Never Experienced Anything Quite Like This’

Mary McDonnell on ‘Major Crimes’ Finale: ‘I’ve Never Experienced Anything Quite Like This’
“Major Crimes” star Mary McDonnell shares with Variety her thoughts on the show’s final season, which saw her character, Sharon Raydor, killed off.

I have been watching, reading and listening to the fans’ reactions to Sharon’s death, and it’s taken me a while to find the essence of my experience. I have been approached by several journalists, but in truth, I was not ready to speak until now.

The fan reaction to the death of Sharon Raydor has been sharply illuminating, deeply, deeply humbling, and a true confirmation of what Commander Raydor stood for. When all of this was in the planning stages, I was hoping we would be able to both announce the end of the series and give a gentle warning as to the death that was coming. My original understanding was that the arc was created as part of an impulse and strategy that revolved around staying in control of the

‘Major Crimes’: Why Was the Star Killed Off a Hit Show? (Column)

‘Major Crimes’: Why Was the Star Killed Off a Hit Show? (Column)
The saga of the final season of “Major Crimes” has had more twists than many a crime procedural — but the most perplexing ones didn’t necessarily occur onscreen.

Mary McDonnell’s character, Sharon Raydor, died on the show — several episodes before the series finale, which aired on Jan. 9. Even more unsettling was the fact that, in the final three episodes, the actress’ name was removed from the credits of the show she’d been the star of for six seasons.

Yes, actor’s names often do get taken out of a show’s opening credits when that character has been killed off (or when producers want the audience to think that the character’s dead). But it’s rare for that to happen to the undisputed lead of a show — and certainly as the show is reaching its conclusion.

The move drew outrage on social media from the show’s fans, who noticed

Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 12 Review: By Any Means: Part 3

It looks like it's going to be a battle to the death between Stroh and the Major Crimes Unit as the show wraps up.

With just one more installment left, Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 12 moved into exciting territory, as the team tried to use Stroh's hack of their phones to set a trap for him, and Stroh became more determined than ever to continue his killing spree.

Meanwhile, Rusty wondered aloud where Stroh finds young boys desperate enough to work for him even though it means signing their death warrants, while the team freaked Dylan out as part of their plan, leaving me to wonder whether this particular weirdo is going to be the primary reason Stroh's plans fall apart.

For all his hacking skills, Dylan really seems naive. He is definitely an amateur when it comes to serious crimes.

First of all, his attempt to hack the security footage

Major Crimes Review: Cursing the Darkness

I wasn't sure how Major Crimes was going to go on after Sharon Raydor's death.

I was both dreading and anticipating Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 10, which gave her a beautiful send-off before getting down to the business of hunting Philip Stroh.

By Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 11, the dust had settled just a tiny bit, but her absence was definitely felt.

All in all, these two hours were both a tribute to Sharon and an illustration of how much the Major Crimes Unit lost with her death.

I loved the video clips Sharon left behind. I thought that interjecting them into the hours after her funeral was a powerful way to tie the story together.

My beautiful family. Let me first say how much I loved you and how much I felt in return.

Mary McDonnell Breaks Silence on Major Crimes Departure

There are still four episodes of Major Crimes left before the hit TNT drama series comes to an end.

But, in one of the most stunning revelations in recent memory, Sharon Raydor was killed off during what was supposed to be her last day on the job.

If you watch Major Crimes online, you will know that Sharon was unwell and was struggling to keep her health in check for much of Major Crimes Season 6.

The big death was met with a mixed response from fans who took issue with the show offing its lead with a handful of episodes left to air.

And the series star, Mary McDonnell has taken notice of the response and took to social media with a lengthy statement thanking the fans for reaching out to her.

Said McDonnell via Facebook:

One day after. Firstly I am stunned by the level of your feelings

Major Crimes Review: End of the Road

I really didn't see this one coming.

Sharon's heart problems have been the focal point of Major Crimes Season 6.

She got a pacemaker that didn't seem to work on Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 8 and asked her priest to administer the last rites just in case on Major Crimes Season 6 Episode 9.

And she refused to go home, continually saying her leave of absence didn't start til the following day.

But I didn't think she would actually die, especially not when the series isn't quite over yet.

I think I'm in as much shock as her friends and family that she's actually gone.

Sharon's struggle to accept the limitations of her illness was heroic and made for great television. I really would have preferred her just to retire as the series wrapped up.

Yet she died doing what she loved best, closing one last case, and maybe that's the way she wanted it.
