Helena is a heartbroken artist dealing with the break-up from her ex-boyfriend, Peter. She soon meets Elliott, a lonely filmmaker casting his new short film based on his own recent heartbreak. Helena and Elliott soon become very close friends, but things get complicated when Elliott falls in love with Helena. But Elliott's grandmother living elsewhere to take care of his great-grandmother is based on director Matt Kieley's grandmother, who moved from Bakersfield to San Diego to take care of his great-grandmother.
