‘Blade Runner 2049’: Where You’ve Seen Its Standout Supporting Cast Before

‘Blade Runner 2049’: Where You’ve Seen Its Standout Supporting Cast Before
The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”

In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

It’s only appropriate that a future-oriented world like the one on display in the “Blade Runner” franchise would spawn new stars, but they’ve shined quite brightly before. Here’s where you

Blade Runner 2049 movie review: a rickety retro replicant

MaryAnn’s quick take… Visually, this dying future world is immersively hellish. Intellectually, though, its ideas haven’t kept up with the rapidly evolving science-fictional conversation. I’m “biast” (pro): love the original film; big science fiction fan

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

You may have heard something about the instructions to critics from director Denis Villeneuve that were passed along at some press screenings of Blade Runner 2049. One critic shared a redacted version:

Concerned this was handed out to critics following #BladeRunner2049 screening this a.m. @akstanwyck @erickohn @AwardsDaily @kristapley pic.twitter.com/gnZ94QZTcl

This is bizarre for many reasons; for one, filmmakers should not be dictating how critics frame their reviews or structure their sentences. (I attended a public multiplex screening,

Overdrive movie review: dumb and dubious

MaryAnn’s quick take… More plot holes than plot, this overly convoluted, deeply stupid Fast and Furious wannabe is crammed with clichés and memorable only when it’s laughable. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Kinda like how John Woo always has doves in his movies, and Steven Spielberg always has lens flare, so shall Colombian director Antonio Negret be known for exploding cars flipping through the air. It’s not a particularly unique visual twitch to embrace, this is true, but he’s not a particularly distinctive sort of filmmaker. His latest, Overdrive, is barely distinguishable from his previous film, 2012’s almost hilariously terrible Transit. Sadly, though, Overdrive is quite distinguishable from the movies it would like to be seen as akin to, the very early Fast and Furious movies (like, the first two

French Box Office Holds Steady During First Seven Months of 2017

French Box Office Holds Steady During First Seven Months of 2017
Paris– Powered by Hollywood animated blockbusters and action-packed franchises, the French box office held relatively steady during the first seven months of 2017 compared to the year before, with 122.3 million admissions.

Illumination MacGuff’s “Despicable Me 3,” directed Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin, is the year’s highest earner so far, having grossed more than 40 million euros ($46.9 million) from 4.7 million admissions.

Box-office figures for the first seven months of 2017 show only a slight 1.7% drop compared to the same period in 2016. Last year, France scored its second-biggest box office performance of the last 50 years with 1.39 billion euros ($1.63 billion) grossed from a total of 213 million admissions, thanks to a mixture of U.S. pics and the latest installments of popular French comedy franchises (namely, “Les Tuches 2” and “Camping 3”).

Although U.S. movies have dominated this year’s chart so far, the market shares of French and American films remain on a par with last year, with

'Overdrive': Film Review

'Overdrive': Film Review
The phenomenal success of the Fast and the Furious series has inevitably spawned a spate of rubber-burning copycats, from the deluxe nerd porn of Edgar Wright’s wildly overpraised Baby Diver to more nakedly obvious cash-ins like this glossy French heist thriller. Parallels with the multibillion-dollar car-chase franchise are more than cosmetic. Overdrive’s American screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas scored their first hit with 2 Fast 2 Furious, while leading man Scott Eastwood had a minor role in the most recent blockbuster installment, The Fate of the Furious

Overdrive Review: Scott Eastwood proves his Fast and the Furious credentials in high-octane heist movie, Overdrive. Overdrive Review

Overdrive could easily be part of the Fast and the Furious universe. Not only does it star Scott Eastwood, who appeared as Little Nobody in the most recent outing, but it also features a plot straight out of an early Fast film. Here we have half-brothers Andrew (Scott Eastwood) and Garrett (Freddie Thorp) whom are career criminals that make a living stealing and fencing classic cars. However, after attempting to steal a car from the wrong guy whilst in Marseille, the siblings find themselves in the grips of the local crime boss Jacomo Morier (Simon Abkarian). The only way out is to steal a car belonging to one of Morier’s rivals. It’s a near impossible task and the brothers must recruit help if they want to get out of this bad situation.
