Stanhope strips everything down to bare essentials. And beers., 14 April 2013
Author: tyler-and-jack from Edinburgh.

As fascinating as it is funny, Doug Stanhope once again sets about trying to destroy the world of horrors growing up around him. In fact, although I did find a lot of this funny I must also warn people that it's not funny in the traditional ha ha sense. It's dark. Even for Stanhope, this is dark.

The man is on a plain stage, having some beers and talking to people that he hopes can understand him. That's it. No big, bright lights behind him. No safe punchlines. No amusing skits about a trip to the supermarket that went horribly wrong.

Love him or loathe him, it's hard to deny that watching Stanhope onstage is a riveting experience. The man speaks and rambles and curses the world and himself as if the whole things is purely catharsis with no need to entertain anyone sitting in his audience. Yet that catharsis is both unnerving and often hilarious, sometimes in equal measure.

Since seeing this gig and the one after it, "Before Turning The Gun On Himself", I have grown to like Stanhope quite a bit. It's a shame, in some ways, that he doesn't seem to like himself all that much, but it also makes for great material.
