Addiction has long been one of Hollywood’s favorite muses. It makes for empowering, emotionally charged films about one of life’s most trying personal battles. Of course, the success and believability of these sorts of movies vary wildly: for every “Half Nelson” and “Trainspotting” there’s a “Thanks For Sharing” or “Flight” (which was fuelled by a fine performance, but in the end was little more than histrionics).

Netflix releases trailer for Anne

Netflix has released a trailer for its next original series, Anne, based on the Anne of Green Gables novel series. The series comes from Breaking Bad‘s Moria Walley-Beckett and Thanks for Sharing’s Miranda de Pencier, and stars Amybeth McNulty in the title role. Watch the trailer below…

Anne follows the young, orphaned Anne Shirley as she comes to Green Gables, the Cuthbert family farm, by accident on Prince Edward Island. Viewed as an outsider for her status, Anne quickly transforms the views of the Cuthbert family and the town of Avonlea through her imaginative mind and optimistic spirit. Anne of Green Gables was first created in 1908 by author Lucy Maud Montgomery and has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. Montgomery wrote several sequels and the series has been adapted in various formats, from television, film and plays, over the years.

While Netflix may boast the global representation of “Anne,” Canadians are already enjoying the series week-by-week on CBC. Then again, our friends up north treasure the character created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, with the 1985 miniseries starring Megan Follows deemed a Canadian classic. But these are modern times, and thus, a new take is required — from showrunners Moira Walley-Beckett (“Breaking Bad,” “Flesh and Bone’) and Miranda de Pencier (“Thanks For Sharing,” “Beginners”), no less.
