Andrea Arnold and Naomi Foner Talk About Being Female Filmmakers

5 October 2013 7:03 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Filmmakers Naomi Foner ("Very Good Girls") and Andrea Arnold ("Fishtank") participated in the Story Creation and the Artistic Process panel as part of the Nyff Live series of filmmaker conversations, making the panel's gender balance 50/50 (the other two panelists were Larry Gross and Henry Bean). When the inevitable audience question about the challenges of being a female filmmaker arose, the two filmmakers responded quite differently. "I never thought I was any different than any blokes growing up, and I still don't," said Arnold, who is the Nyff's inaugural Filmmaker-in-Residence. "I don't feel discriminated against particularly as a women writer." Arnold added that she only chooses to work with men and women who treat her equally. Foner's take on the issue is that society has yet to catch up with laws about discrimination and that the culture still undermines women even when it comes to family dynamics such as child-rearing. 8 Writing Tips From Screenwriting Masters Larry Gross, Naomi Foner, Henry Bean and Andrea Arnold

4 October 2013 1:15 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Veteran award-winning screenwriters Henry Bean ("The Believer"), Larry Gross ("We Don't Live Here Anymore") and Naomi Foner ("Very Good Girls") talked about their craft and tricks of the trade, along with Filmmaker in Residence Andrea Arnold ("Fishtank") yesterday at the Story Creation and the Artistic Process panel as part of the Nyff Live free-to-the-public series of filmmaker conversations. Arnold is currently in New York as the 2013 "Filmmaker in Residence" for the 51st New York Film Festival. The project she is working on, which she described as a "road movie," is set in the U.S. so she felt the "filmmaker in residence" gig was just what she needed to finish it. "I've already written a draft and I'm really self-critical with my writing and I've been holding it close to me for quite a long time. When this residence thing came up, I thought 'oh my God, that's just what »

Dakota Fanning Looks Like the Most Sophisticated Miley Cyrus We've Ever Seen!

9 September 2013 11:47 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

First she starts dating an older man, then she starts wearing belly-exposing dresses?! Is Dakota Fanning the latest victim of Miley Cyrus fever? We're not sure there's such a thing given the recent bad press from the "We Can't Stop" singer's Vma's performance, but it's hard to deny how much the former Disney star and current Night Moves actress look alike in this Atelier Versace frock. Even the pale skin and super blond hair are the same! Of course, we have to give the Very Good Girls actress a little credit. Her slithery sequined gown is a far cry from the racier midriff looks Miley has been known to rock. In fact, the infamous twerker could stand to take a page from the famous »

Elizabeth Olsen May Be Next Female ‘Avenger’, Rumored To Play Scarlet Witch

21 August 2013 1:26 AM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Elizabeth Olsen may be our next female Avenger. According to reports, little Lizzie is up for the role of the Scarlet Witch, a character previously rumored to be played by Saoirse Ronan, who has since passed on the Marvel–ous opportunity.

Both Joss Whedon and Marvel are said to be interested in the youngest Olsen, who first made a splash with the fantastic indie film Martha Marcy May Marlene. Frankly, we’re not surprised that Olsen is being courted for this major female role. She’s nabbed some pretty awesome projects in a short amount of time, including a starring role in Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy. She’s also set to appear in Godzilla.

Though many of Olsen’s projects have yet to be released (Kill Your Darlings, Therese, Very Good Girls), she’s proven herself a likable and talented actress. However, Marvel is a whole different ballgame, »

Dakota Fanning's Sex Scene With Peter Sarsgaard: Movie Directed By...His Mother-In-Law!

27 July 2013 6:30 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

The next time Peter Sarsgaard agrees to be in a movie directed by wife Maggie Gyllenhaal's mother, he'll probably read the script a lot more carefully. Naomi Foner directed Sarsgaard last year in the Very Good Girls, an indie that marks her directorial debut about two New York City girls (Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen) who make a pact to lose their virginity the summer after their freshman year of high school. "Bizarre, totally bizarre," Sarsgaard told me about being directed by Foner at the Los Angeles premiere of his latest movie, Blue Jasmine (in theaters now). "I hadn't read it that carefully, so I didn't realize I was going to be doing a sex scene," he said. "So »
