Storyline

The night after a meteor shower has fallen Sarah Jane finds an abandoned baby girl whom she calls Sky on her door-step. Sky is plainly not of this world as she blows all the electrics in the street. At the local power station a surge of electricity heralds the appearance of Sky's mother Miss Myers, anxious to claim her child for possibly less than maternal reasons. At the same time a metallic robot is also after Sky and as Sarah Jane and her friends witness the stand-off between the two parties at the power station Sky suddenly transforms from an infant into a little girl. Nothing But Blue Sky Do I See
17 August 2012 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

After a dynamite fourth season, THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES returns for a fifth, cut short by the unexpected death of lead star Elisabeth Sladen. It is fairly clear the production team was planning some major changes. This episode sees the introduction of Sinead Michael as Sarah Jane's new adoptive alien daughter, to keep the cast of an age for the intended audience to connect with it.

Given the ever-increasing regular cast that must be trotted out for each story and the narrative burden of introducing Sky, this two-part story feels a bit rushed and some of the performances suffer. However the real strength of SJA has been that it is clearly and securely pre-watershed and knows it. Some of the more adult themes that creep into DOCTOR WHO and seem to be the primary purpose of TORCHWOOD are handled in a purely symbolic manner here, and are better for it, requiring subtlety and care in writing.

In this one, we see Ealing becoming the battleground between the Metalkind and the Fleshkind, with Sky intended as a weapon in the war. In the constant war between the proponents of nature and technology, sometimes the people whom both sides claim to be protecting get hurt.
