For a start, Marshall raises a question about something that has often irritated me. He asks Mary about her "ob gyne" appointment, and Mary seems upset that he doesn't say "oh bee gee wye en". I've always been puzzled/irritated that American usage seems to prefer five syllables when fewer would do, as demonstrated by Marshall. On the eastern side of the Atlantic, I'm accustomed to hearing it as only two syllables "gy nae". If you really need to clarify what you mean, then you need to use the full "obstetrician and gynaecologist", but Why? when "gy nae" and "ob gyne" both do the job with minimal effort. Back to the episode itself - it felt a bit fragmented, between the Mary/dog storyline and "the rest". And "the rest" was the storyline around the young singer, which fell into at least two fragments - sorting out the relationship between the mother and daughter, and actually protecting the daughter. I confess I did not see the approach of the twist where it was actually the daughter who was covering for the mother's behaviour, not the other way round. Altogether, an episode I would watch again, even just for Liz Nicole Abram's performance as the young singer and eventual teacher. It was good to see Patricia Belcher in a "non Bones" role, and particularly good to see Robert LaSardo being allowed to show his acting abilities in the role of an ultimately sympathetic character, beyond the sinister villains he is so brilliant at projecting.
