The characterisation of Susan is very interesting:For a long time now, her insistence on running people's lives has been portrayed as a good thing, but here her obsession with looking after Summer, and the way she transfers her attentions to Billy once rejected, is portrayed as positively psychopathic, with her relationship with Karl suffering as a result. It's an interesting new perspective and one that's long overdue.
Meanwhile, Tasha finds herself occasionally at odds with her friends and her father as she pursues her relationship with older man Ivan. This works better here than previously, as we're allowed to see that Ivan just sees her as a bit of fun rather than just being told that he's bad for her.Michael actually does a fairly good job of parenting here, thanks partly to some advice from Karl, increasingly the lone voice of sanity.
