Completely off-the-wall exploitation, 25 October 2012
Author: ns1crr from United Kingdom

This is one of these movies where you watch it and its combination of cinematic incompetence and content that would be repulsive to most people makes you wonder how it got made. Who would give funding to it. The answer to this, as explained by the director in a Q&A is that money was provided by the Chilean government film funding board on the understanding that the film would be a drama. The film crew then headed into the mountains to make the film where nobody could oversee what they were doing. On seeing the finished product, the film funding board were not happy and never spoke to the director again.

The plot of the film is completely illogical, almost like a stream of consciousness, with plot points like cannibalism coming out of nowhere, and extreme violence, usually sexual violence, being exacted on characters for no reason. Basically the film's mise-en-scene is to throw as much offensive content at the screen as possible in an attempt to shock. Thus we get incestuous rape, cannibalism, highly sexualised rape, bloody shoot-outs, a mentally disabled boy with birth defects portrayed as practically an animal, chainsaw murders, even more rape, etc. This is actually less interesting than it sounds. After a while, the endless depravity begins to blur together, although it does give a frisson of guilt and breaching boundaries that watching such content can give.

The technical quality of film-making is generally very poor, with awful direction providing choppy storytelling and badly thought-out scenes (man with a chainsaw beating two cops with drawn guns: one of them just stands there watching him slowly killing her partner, then fires two shots from six feet away and misses), barely serviceable acting, non-existent or poor lighting, and, in the version I saw, terribly translated subtitles which provided unintentional laughs.

I can't really recommend this film, and it would certainly be unwatchable for most people, but if you're someone who enjoys the poorly made but shocking exploitation films that were prevalent in the 1970s, then this is practically a throwback to those and provides some interest with its disregard of narrative and sleazy parade of horrors. I do like exploitation films, hence the four stars. For everybody else, stay away.
