Welcome to "That Happened This Year," MTV News' look back at the huge entertainment stories that were absolutely everywhere for a hot minute in 2011 but feel like they happened forever ago or faded so quickly from our collective memories that when we were brainstorming the year that was, we literally couldn't believe they happened this year!
Even the idea that Jennifer Lopez's career comeback began less than a year ago seems to defy physics. Did she somehow interrupt the space-time continuum in an effort to alter the very nature of time, where one year seems like three or four, to fool us into thinking she never really went anywhere?
For all intents and purposes, La Lopez's return to the top began on January 19, 2011 (we can't believe it either), when the tenth season of "American Idol" premiered on Fox. And in one fell swoop, nearly six years of box office »

For many filmgoers, the knowledge of which studio is releasing what film they are seeing isn’t necessary to the experience, likely a minuscule effect of their decision. But it could mean the difference of where, when, how and even if you see a film. With that, we bring you the news that FilmDistrict is shifting their distribution plans for their upcoming 2012 slate.
We got word that their executive Bob Berney would be leaving the company (coming after his shingle Apparition folded), and now their CEO Peter Schlessel has finalized a 3-picture distribution deal with the newly launched Open Road to handle some of their films, Deadline reports. The first of the titles will be the Luc Besson-produced sci-fi thriller Escape From M.S. One, which was titled Lockout up to about yesterday, when the trailer hit. Starring Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace the film will arrive on April »

The seminal moment in the history of cinema came at the turn of the 20th century, when the medium began to move away from the storytelling language of the theatre. Filmmakers like Edwin S Porter began to realise that the camera could do so much more than simply record what was in front of it; such techniques as close-ups and edits to different angles or locations could be used to create drama.
It’s these filmmaking techniques that the masters of cinema use to create suspense and feelings of dread. And while there’s nothing wrong with jabs of violence of gore in movies, it remains the case that anticipation or suggestion of a violent act is more effective than seeing the moment itself. »
He may stay comfortably in the action genre, but Jason Statham works harder than many colleagues. Originally set for a fall release, his upcoming action film Safe, was moved to next year just because there were so many other Statham flicks around the same time. Blitz and 13 hit straight-to-video here and his Robert De Niro/Clive Owen thriller Killer Elite debuted just a few months ago.
For Safe, Statham teams up with Remember the Titans director Boaz Yakin for what looks to at least be a step above this year’s banal remake of The Mechanic. I just wish Statham would return to some roles like in his early Guy Ritchie days or even something like The Bank Job, but that may be too much to ask. Check out the trailer below via Yahoo and one can also see Statham in The Expendables 2 and Parker next year.

There now seems to be an unofficial rule that at least a handful of action-packed flicks that star Jason Statham (or feature him in some capacity) must be released on an annual basis.
Case in point: this year, the brawny star appeared in The Mechanic, Blitz, and Killer Elite. In 2012, he is slated to show up in Parker, Echelon, The Expendables 2 and Safe, another hyper-kinetic shoot-em-up romp that features Statham playing (what else) a virtually invincible modern-day warrior.
Statham stars in Safe as Luke Wright, a former elite agent who haphazardly encounters a young Chinese girl named Mei (Catherine Chan) when she is pursued by a pack of thugs on the New York subway. After rescuing Mei, Wright discovers that she is a prodigy who has discovered and memorized a secret code wanted by not ...

It's the end of the week, you're tired, I'm tired, so let's see what casting news Hollywood has flung out in the last 20-odd hours. Emma Stone has signed onto yet another snarky romantic comedy, this one titled "He's Fuckin' Perfect." She'll play a "social media savvy girl who is pessimistic about love, and vets her friends' dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match." Well, props to the rom-com genre for finally realizing Google and Facebooks were things people used! The film is being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions, and was penned by McKay's assistant, Lauryn Kahn. [Deadline] Renaissance thespian Brian Cox is returning to comedy, and is joining the cast of Jay Roach's "Dog Fight" alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. »
There is a certain question that haunted my childhood. It wasn’t as simple as it seemed and was a time-consuming effort to find an answer. It was, of course, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?. I religiously watched the TV show as a kid and played the educational computer game in school, all while learning the glorious subject of geography. Now, Deadline reports a live-action film is coming courtesy of Walden Media and Jennifer Lopez.
Yes, the singer-turned-actress will produce and possibly star in the film that is being described as “National Treasure meets The Thomas Crown Affair.” It would be neat to see a little edge when it comes to the thief character, but coming from Walden, I expect it to fall in line with their other extremely family-friendly properties like the Chronicles of Narnia series. Check out a synopsis below.

Sexy bombshell Jessica Biel takes the spotlight on the latest cover of Elle magazine, but kept tight-lipped about her on/off romance with longtime beau Justin Timberlake. "A girl doesn't kiss and tell."
Here is what Biel, 29, shared with the publication:
With "Big Love" wrapped after five seasons, Bill Paxton has a whole lot of free time on his hands. In addition to his several upcoming acting gigs, the "Titanic" and "Twister" star is looking to get back into directing. He hasn't helmed a project since 2005's sports drama "The Greatest Game Ever Played," but now it is being reported that he is looking to adapt "Kung Fu," the TV series that made a star of David Carradine.
Deadline has the news that Paxton is in talks to direct an update on "Kung Fu" for Legendary Entertainment. The plan is to have the movie start shooting in China next summer if Paxton ends up coming on board.
The show follows a Shaolin monk wandering around the American West in search of his brother, but ends up getting involved in crazy adventures along the way. David Carradine was the original star of the franchise. »
