Eisner Award Nominees

20 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Eisner Awards, the "Oscars of Comics" have announced their nominations for the current season (they follow more of a Tony Awards timetable) and the results are heavy on Image comics with Marvel scoring in the top "continuing series" category with the current run of Hawkeye. Maybe there's hope for Jeremy Renner's unloved movie hero after all?  Or maybe not. It's up against last year's winner Saga.

I want to share two categories that have particular appeal to us here at Tfe. They have an adapted category (which sometimes pulls from movies) and a digital comics category and you know I keep trying to start one though admittedly I never fully commit.

Best Adaptation from Another Medium

The Castle, by Franz Kafka, adapted by David Zane Mairowitz and Jaromír 99 (SelfMadeHero) The Complete Don Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, adapted by by Rob Davis (SelfMadeHero) Django Unchained, adapted by Quentin Tarantino, »

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Gets IMAX Poster, New Release Date and TV Spots

8 April 2014 7:50 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was originally set to be released in the UK on April 18th, but Sony Pictures revealed yesterday that fans will be able to enjoy it a little sooner than that.

To get you in the mood for Marc Webb’s sequel, we also have a new IMAX Mondo poster and a couple of extended TV spots, along with what is apparently the final trailer.

Of course, now that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released in the UK on April 16th, you may want to avoid seeing any more from the movie until then.

There’s some great new footage in the previews below however, and the poster (by Matt Taylor) is a very nice piece of artwork which would look positively amazing framed and on the wall.

In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys »

Last Action Heroesc Has the Macho, Action Genre Hit a Low Pointc

1 April 2014 9:25 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I didn't quite know how to describe the genre I'm referring to with this post (BoxOfficeMojo doesn't even have a category for it), but suffice to say I'm particularly targeting the films made popular by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone back in the '80s and more recently it seems Jason Statham had a lock down on things. Now, however, it only seems Liam Neeson can really generate any box-office juice with his cinematic fisticuffs, otherwise it has to be an ensemble or nothing. I ask because ever since Schwarzenegger made his way back to movies after playing Governor for eight years, he's seen The Last Stand, Escape Plan and this past weekend's Sabotage tank at the box office. Similarly, Stallone has seen Bullet to the Head, Escape Plan and Grudge Match bomb at the box office and Statham has seen a string of non-starters including Killer Elite, »

CinemaCon 2014: Footage Revealed for ‘Fast & Furious 7′

25 March 2014 2:14 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

There’s no turning back.

Universal Pictures premiered some “Fast & Furious 7” footage at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. Latino-Review was in attendance.

More than half of the film was completed before the accidental death of actor Paul Walker last year. So the footage shown at the convention included Walker and not a double or CGI version of him.

The opening scene was with the entire crew with their vehicles in a cargo plane. They would parachute in their vehicles onto a road in a mountainous area except for Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) who is afraid of heights. But, Tej Parker (Ludacris) attaches a cable to the back of his vehicle and drags his vehicle out of the plane.

There’s a lot of quick montage scenes after that, including a first look at the villain Ian Shaw (Jason Statham) shooting a machine gun into the ceiling. And also the »

Meet G. Willow Wilson, the Muslim Woman Revolutionizing Superhero Comics

20 March 2014 8:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Superhero comics are built on amazing feats: flying, climbing walls, transforming into a giant green monster while somehow keeping your purple shorts on. But G. Willow Wilson has done something even Superman never bothered to do: create a female Muslim superhero and turn her into an overnight marketing sensation.Wilson writes Ms. Marvel, a monthly Marvel Comics series that debuted in February. It stars Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old child of Pakistani immigrants living in Jersey City (well, the Marvel universe’s version of Jersey City, where Iron Man, Captain America, and the like battle bad guys just across the Hudson). Kamala is a hero in the Peter Parker tradition: dweeby, self-doubting, unpopular. Like so many of today’s teen geeks, she spends her nights resenting her parents and writing fan fiction for online forums. A bizarre incident leaves Kamala with shapeshifting powers, and even though we’re only on issue No. »

The HeyUGuys Instant Watching Guide – March 10th 2014

10 March 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Perhaps the only news of note this week is that in a move echoing what they did with Breaking Bad, Netflix has swooped in and gained rights to the TV series of From Dusk Til Dawn made in the states for Robert Rodriguez’s new El Rey network cable channel. Netflix will stream the episodes the day after they air in the states every week, curiously they are still billing this as ‘A Netflix Original’ when this isn’t the case necessarily. I have no idea as to the quality of this, the film From Dusk Til Dawn was one of my favourites when I was a teenager but how you drag that out into a ten part TV show I don’t know, let alone a possible second series. I watched the trailer and it looks solid and well-made as opposed to a cheap cash in and features Don Johnson »

Homefront – The Blu Review

9 March 2014 8:06 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With Homefront, the ever prolific Jason Statham was back for his third film of 2013! First it was Parker, then Redemption (which went straight to Redbox) and finally this Sylvester Stallone-penned film based on the book by Chuck Logan. Much has been made of the script being written by Sly mostly because short-term memory critics forget the man has written a ton of screenplays, was Oscar-nominated for one, and developed three of the most successful movie franchises of all time. Here again he shows that he hasn’t lost his touch. It’s a simple-minded and predictable Bronsonesque revenge tale but it mostly works. As for the action, we get a couple of car chases and lots of the old fashioned brawling Statham fans expect.

When Jim Batts reviewed Homefront for We Are Movie Geeks in November, he wrote “Director Gary Fleder keeps the story moving forward and gives us »

Tennessee Bombing Suspect Had Been Convicted of Arson

In 1990, when Richard Parker faced an accusation that he'd burned down a cabin he was renovating for another couple, attorney Jon Setzer believed in his son-in-law's innocence and helped to defend him. "He felt that the suggestion that Richard had been guilty of arson was not justified," attorney George Cate said of his former longtime law partner, in an interview with the Associated Press. "He was supporting his son-in-law at that time." In a plea deal, Parker eventually was given four years' probation and paid $40,000 restitution. But the cabin's owners, Danny and Rosemary Martin, never forgot that incident - and »
