Kevin Hart, Jennifer Aniston, and Michael Keaton honored at the first People Magazine Awards

19 December 2014 4:23 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

For those who thought the Hollywood Film Awards were a bit too virtuous, People Magazine decided 2014 was the year to throw a hat into the awards ring, conjuring its own set of accolades to hand out during a star-studded gala event. Thursday night, the winners of the first annual The People Magazine Awards were announced during a two-hour NBC special hosted by Nick Cannon. Completely comprised of talent-based honors, Jennifer Aniston took home the show’s Movie Performance of the Year — Actress award for her work in "Cake," while Michael Keaton earned the Male equivalent for his turn in "Birdman." Hey, People is following the awards circuit! After squeezing her way into the SAG and Golden Globes, the People award marks Anison’s win for "Cake," and the first award she has won for feature film work. Which is nice in an Al-Pacino-wins-for-"Scent of a Woman"-plus-every-other-contribution-to-the-medium kind of way. »

10 December 2014 1:22 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.

In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.

The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

SAG Nominations and Announcement of A New Feature

10 December 2014 7:38 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.

Here's where a new running feature comes into play:

As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline, »

Ferguson-Inspired Documentary American Race In The Works From Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker

28 November 2014 12:44 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

In the wake of this week’s grand jury verdict for Darren Wilson, the officer standing trial for the fatal shooting of Ferguson resident, Michael Brown, two filmmakers have pledged to make a stand. Oscar-nominated documentarian Amy Berg has joined forces with actor Nate Parker to helm a social commentary on what they’ve dubbed a “black male crisis” in the U.S.

“Our conversations about race in this country have been ongoing,” Berg said. “It is truly a tragic state that we are in that we have to remind people that we abolished slavery 150 years ago, but the sad statistics today show that black people are targeted every day by the system. Our systemic racial profiling is very deeply embedded in our culture, and the Michael Brown case shows we have to find a way to change this. Now.”

Ferguson, ‘Black Male Crisis’ Documentary in the Works (Exclusive)

27 November 2014 10:24 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg and actor Nate Parker are teaming on a “Black Male Crisis” documentary in the U.S. in the wake of the August shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. in August.

Berg, Parker and writer-director Matthew Cooke launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign on Wednesday — two days after the announcement of a grand jury failing to indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting.

The campaign has already generated $3,125 or 12% of its $25,000 goal. Deadline for contributions is Jan. 5.

“In response to the growing problem of racial disparity due to the ongoing dehumanization of black men, actor and activist Nate Parker is setting out on a journey of investigation,” the campaign site said. “He will venture into black communities to speak to various stakeholders about the crisis facing these men. Through the examination of specific cases, Nate will create relevant and responsive discourse with the intention of mining strong »

Ten Great Performances from Mike Nichols' Films

21 November 2014 7:00 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Amir here. Mike Nichols was a true giant of show business, with a career that lasted more than six decades and sprawled across many different media and genres. Nathaniel's heartfelt eulogy already highlighted the dreamy number of classics he directed and the collaborations with Meryl Streep that resulted in some of her most memorable roles; but Meryl wasn't the only performer whom Nichols guided to career-best work.

Team Experience decided to make a list of ten great performances from Mike Nichols' films; we were truly spoilt for choice. If you want a testament to the man's sheer brilliance and chemistry with his actors, look no further than the missing names from our list. An equally long, equally illustrious alternative list can be made of the likes of Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson's War, Jude Law and Natalie Portman in Closer, »

Review: Keanu Reeves shoots all the faces in the preposterous pulpy 'John Wick'

13 October 2014 2:10 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Austin - When the lights went down in the theater for the Fantastic Fest debut of "John Wick," I had no expectations at all for the film. It never occurred to me that it would end up being one of the most enjoyable things I saw there and a genuinely exciting announcement for a pair of pulp action filmmakers. Chad Stahelski was the stuntman who doubled for Keanu Reeves on "The Matrix," and since then, he's done "The Replacements," both "Matrix" sequels, "Thumbsucker," "Constantine," and "Man Of Tai Chi" with Reeves, and they've developed a strong collaborative relationship. David Leitch, who co-directed the film with Stahelski, has worked on dozens of movies with him in the stunt department. They've both worked as second-unit actual unit directors on films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Escape Plan," "Safe," "The Wolverine," Parker," "Ninja Assassin," and the upcoming "Jurassic World." ‘The Boy Next Door’ Trailer: Jennifer Lopez Has Made a Terrible Mistake

We knew Jennifer Lopez as an actress before we knew her as a singer, but it’s been a long time since she’s had a real hit film. Jennifer Lopez Beds 'The Boy Next Door' in Steamy Trailer (Video)

9 September 2014 2:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Jennifer Lopez is still sexy at 45 to make any boy hot for teach.

The sexy singer returns to the big screen in "The Boy Next Door," and the first trailer shows that Lopez still has "it." She plays a high school teacher and divorced mom who becomes involved with an underage student who moves in next door (Ryan Guzman, "Step Up").

After a steamy night together, Lopez comes to her senses, but Noah becomes obsessed with her - joining her class, befriending her son, and plastering her classroom with pictures of their encounter.

"I'm never letting you go," he says ominously.

Lopez's film career has been sputtering in recent years. Last year's Jason Statham vehicle, "Parker," bombed, as did her last starring vehicle, 2010's "The Back-Up Plan." So, can she return to her more critically-acclaimed, hit days with "The Boy Next Door." We'll see when the thriller hits theaters Jan. »

Watch: First Trailer For Jennifer Lopez Thriller "The Boy Next Door'

8 September 2014 7:50 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

She's had a few attempts by now, but Jennifer Lopez is still in search of her movie comeback. While one-time Bennifer partner Ben Affleck has reinvented himself as a director and as Batman, Lopez has gone a while without a real hit, with films like "The Back-up Plan," "What To Expect When You're Expecting" and "Parker" not quite delivering, and no big-screen appearance in two years (a sign, no doubt, of the relative sparcity of roles for women when they enter their forties). But Lopez has something on the way that seems like it could be a legit hit: falling in the footsteps of Halle Berry, who had a sleeper hit a few years back with "The Call," the star is going into thriller territory with next January's "The Boy Next Door," and a trailer has just arrived for the film. ‘Expendables 3′: Measuring The Sum Of Its Star Parts In Key Overseas Markets

16 August 2014 4:12 AM, PDT | Deadline New York | See recent Deadline New York news »

The Expendables 3 is debuting this weekend in 40 territories including Russia, the UK, Mexico and Australia — and features a powerhouse ensemble that includes Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer and Kellan Lutz.

Together, the cast outweighs the sum of its parts, but the parts are actually quite interesting when looked at in terms of international box-office drawing power, especially in mega markets like China, Korea, Russia, Brazil, and parts of Western Europe. Below, I’ve broken out numbers for some of the individual stars across those markets with a nifty slideshow that covers their last three major titles outside the franchise in these key territories.* The first Expendables film did about $274M worldwide, with $171M from overseas. In an unusual turn of events for a sequel, the franchise’s second film saw its earnings drop in the U. »
