Storyline

The whole family is gathering at Jay's before heading out to Alex's graduation ceremony from middle school, but while at the house, Jay is preoccupied hiding a botox mishap from everyone, Cameron is upset about Mitchell's habit of laughing at his expense, and Phil tries to sympathize with, yet also antagonize Claire on her impending breakdown over the kids growing up too fast. All of this, plus a faulty gate, could mean their missing Alex's big moment. Written by ABC Publicity

Graduation
11 March 2012 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

Certain moments in one's life are marked by an end of something, be it a love affair, or in this case a graduation. Alex, the nerdy Dunphy girl, is preparing for the speech she will make to the class of 2011. She will start high school in the fall and wants to make her mark. She is zeroing on the kids that have tormented her for being smart. Her sister is terrified because of the caustic way Alex is putting into her Valedictorian speech.

At Michell and Cameron's home, there is a different thing going on. Cam, having fallen into Lily's pool, is appalled to see his partner laugh at seeing him in the water. As they prepare for the ceremony, Cam cannot let it go of the resentment he feels by being laughed at by Mitch.

The Pritchetts, who are also going are facing a different dilemma. Jay cannot open the gate to get into his house. To Gloria's amazement, Jay shows a swollen eye. The reason is a Botox shot he agreed to get from his doctor which has left that condition. The three families are meeting at his house. He is mortified to be seen looking like this.

The gate problem persists as everyone is trying to leave Jay's house. Claire and Phil realize they will miss the ceremony, so they jump out and begin pedaling on a tandem bicycle which breaks in the middle of the road, but a friendly Mexican crew take them to the school as Alex is starting on her speech. Alex, taking a look at Haley, decides to change her speech to some amazing results.

The episode was directed by Steven Levitan who is one of the creators of this funny sitcom. Danny Zucker and Elaine Ko wrote the material for the chapter. Mr. Levitan gets good all around acting from all the principals.
