• Emma Lavenham : There's one thing I missed out of my pithy self-description the other day: I'm engaged to be married.

  [Dalgliesh nods but says nothing] 

  Emma Lavenham : No reaction. All around you, people are coming apart at the seams, reaching momentous decisions with barely time to stop and think, and you're *supremely* indifferent, unruffled.

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : I'm here to investigate a crime.

  Emma Lavenham : What, here at St Anselm's or here on this earth, to do that and no more?

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : What are you saying?

  Emma Lavenham : I'm saying: what do you think about me being engaged to be married?

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : [pause]  I wish you weren't.

  Emma Lavenham : Then I'm *not*.

• [Adam Dalgliesh and Father Martin are sitting on the sea shore, at the end of the case] 

  Father Martin Petrie : You know, Adam, when I saw you again after all these years, I could see that you had fulfilled the promise of your youth... but you weren't happy. You must forgive me, Adam, if you think me impertinent or insensitive, but you know grief can be an indulgence.

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : It isn't grief that keeps me single, Father. It's ego. Love of privacy, fear of being hurt or responsible.

  [Dalgliesh sees Emma walking towards them on the beach] 

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : Did you invite her?

  Father Martin Petrie : I, er, told her you were coming.

  [Dalgliesh waves to Emma and she waves back] 

  Commander Adam Dalgliesh : Is she coming down?

  Father Martin Petrie : She's narrowed the gap to two hundred yards. I think the rest is up to you, Adam.

  [Adam and Father Martin grin at each other. Adam stands up and walks towards Emma]
