The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising previewed its annual exhibition of costumes from the previous year’s films on Saturday with a reception held at its campus downtown.
Outfits from all five Academy Award film nominees, as well as ones from designers nominated by the Costume Designers Guild, were among those displayed at the Fidm Museum. The 23 films represented include Oscar costume nominees “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Inherent Vice,” “Into the Woods” (also nominated for the Costume Designers Guild Awards), “Maleficient” and “Mr. Turner.” Costumes from “Birdman,” “The Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Theory of Everything,” among others, were also on display.
“Selma” designer Ruth E. Carter said she selected the costumes on display herself. This is her third year at the exhibit, after her work from “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” and “Sparkle” was showcased in previous years.
“I’m a self-taught costume designer — no formal training,” Carter said. »
