Talented private detective Todd practically lives in is car, having lost his license set up by his criminal ex partner, so he earns a meager living investigating insurance fraud, but finds it hard to pay off debts, even $9000 his old-fashioned mother, stickler attorney Margaret, actually billed him for preventing a criminal conviction. Learning her second husband Harry is missing, having left an apparent suicide note, Todd proves his 'modern nonsense' works great to follow his mysterious trail to a new home actually rented by a long-missing magician, or actually his son. Margaret hires him as interim for the law firm's regular detective on maternity leave, but doesn't trust him enough for her major case, a parking garage shooting defense, which yet gets solved through his observation gift. And he finds Harry on a plane to Iceland, refusing to spend his last years, given a Parkinson's diagnosis, with domineering Margaret.
