This episode along with episode 12 was delayed due to the news coverage of the 2011 Sendai Earthquake and Tsunami disaster. Writer Gen Urobuchi expressed he was fine with the decision and that the delay would allow the filmmakers to improve on the quality.
The Tanker Truck Homura rides during her fight has SHAFT Written on it, named for the animation studio of this series.
The missiles Homura uses in her fight against Walpurgisnacht are Type 88 anti ship missiles from the Japan Ground Self Defense Force. Interestingly the same day this aired the JGSDF's 6th Surface-to-Ship Missile Regiment, which used these type of missiles, disbanded.
This is the only Puella Magi Madoka Magica episode to not feature Sayaka.
In the manga version, Walpurgisnacht is shown to have the deceased Sayaka, Kyouko and Mami as minions. This depiction was also in the original storyboard but not shown in the final version.
