Killing Ruth: The Snuff Dialogues (2011): Dir: Nicholas Kinsey / Cast: Irena Huljak, Dee Wallace, Patrizio Sanzari, Kevin Jackson, Doug Sutherland: Intriguing independent film about what parents can pass down to their children. In this case Ruth arrives home to find her father dead and learns that he was secretly a hit-man. In her desire to find out the nature of his death she contacts the people he was involved with and becomes involved in the same practices. Upon suffocating an elderly woman in a hospital, she strikes up an unusual friendship with her neighbour who is fascinated with her lifestyle. This film reeks the term low budget but makes up for it with good locations, a workable concept and interesting characters. The ending is the expected corrupt delivery that these films often render towards but director Nicholas Kinsey wisely steers towards the background relationship between Ruth and her father. Irena Huljak holds her own as Ruth who takes on her father's duties despite the nature of it. Dee Wallace brings amusement to the woman in the nursing home where Ruth commits the opening scene murder. Patrizio Sanzari plays her boyfriend who saves her from certain rape in a flashback. They end up separated for a year in order to sway police. Kevin Jackson plays Ruth's father's old contact and who sends her on her missions of sorts. Doug Sutherland plays her father who appears in flashbacks. The underline theme seems to address how we follow in our parents' footsteps and life choices even if those lifestyles are as corrupt as the snuff dialogues presented here. Score: 7 / 10
