Red winter
12 December 2012 | by (New York) – See all my reviews

The finding of a hand on a Christmas tree outside a Parisian church, brings police commissioner Rousseau to the scene. The only problem, no body is found nearby, something that puzzles the detectives. The hand, with a large ruby ring attached to one finger makes no sense, the precious stone is quite valuable.

At another part of France, a mysterious woman is seen abandoning the bed where, evidently she had a kinky sexual session, as she unties the hands of the lover still in bed. Her blonde wig is a disguise. We watch her as she transforms herself into her normal self. It turns out she is a police profiler, Marielle De Luca, who is called by the Paris detectives to come and help them investigating the crime at hand.

Rousseau, a no-nonsense man, is not exactly elated with the new arrival. He has to allow her in the process of finding the killer, much against his wishes. Since DeLuca has no place to go, he offers her to stay at his absent son's small apartment. Marielle, who has been conducting an online sexual chat with a man, takes his offer to go to a hotel to consume their affair. Of course, Marielle goes with her blonde disguise.

Things at the Rousseaus are not exactly pleasant. His wife Lili, a paraplegic, confined to a wheel chair, must spend long hours by herself. She lives hoping for the reappearance of the son that has gone to India and never returned. Rousseau invites Marielle, who has no one in Paris, to come to dinner which is surrounded by a tense atmosphere. Marielle realizes what is wrong with her hosts, but stays quiet.

Marielle is instrumental for pointing out the sex shop where most of the victims used to work. The woman in charge of the shop, Francoise Berthier, and her son Fabrize, have been running an illegal pornographic business as they filmed some of the dead women and distribute the pictures. Marielle is told by one of the girls about a big deal behind the facade. At the same time, Marielle is almost compromised as her cover about the sexual encounter is almost revealed, as it ties with one of the Berthiers.

An interesting "policier", with a twist was created by Xavier Durringer, the director. The rainy atmosphere of a Christmas in Paris, adds to the gloomy aspect of this television made film. Based on a Gilda Piersanti novel, the film is erotically charged. The scenario offers a twist with the police profiler's own sexual habits, which nearly derails her involvement in the procedures. There is also a domestic drama in the police commissioner's own life as we get to know the reason for the state that keeps her bound to a wheelchair.

Patrick Chesnais, a character actor who has worked a lot in the French cinema plays Rousseau. Camille Panonacle is the profiler helping with the investigation, who has issues herself that if found, will no doubt complicate her position in the police force. Brigitte Catillon appears as Mme. Berthier. A silent Jane Birkin makes an excellent appearance in the film as the paraplegic wife of Roussseau. Watching Ms. Birkin, this viewer realizes the immense resemblance between the actress and her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg.
