You're Next is a fun slasher with a great heroine with some major flaws
You're Next arrived to me with a lot of hype. I'm talking raves upon raves of praise about how it destroys horror movie tropes and brings a new kind of horror movie. I didn't get that. I did get a fun slasher movie with perhaps the most awesome "final girl" we've had in years, but this isn't anything close to great.
Good: Like I said, the female lead is the best part of the movie. Sharni Vinson does great as the "final girl" with more tricks up her sleeve than she leads others to believe. I loved her role in the movie. The kills were bloody with one in particular standing out. I like the look of the killers and the motivation behind the killings was predictable although a tad clever. There's some good comedy in here as well.
Bad: The first half of the movie before the killing is painfully slow. Just a bunch of people bickering with each other. It gets annoying fast and besides Vinson, there's little chance of rooting for the others here. While it does have fun with some horror conventions, it isn't revolutionary. It still follows the formula and predictability we come to expect with these kinds of movies. It isn't scary either with the movie suffering from shaky cam during the horror moments.
Overall, it's a fun movie for sure if you like slasher movies. A great heroine and some good kills abound, but don't expect a horror masterpiece like it is being herald as.
