- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Don't worry - your turn will come.
- Lady Edith Crawley: Will it? Or am I just to be the maiden aunt? Isn't this what they do? Arrange presents for their prettier relations?
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Don't be defeatist dear, it's very middle class.
- [during dinner, several of the Grantham family have been stricken with Spanish flu]
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Wasn't there a masked ball in Paris when cholera broke out? Half the guests were dead before they left the ballroom.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: [sarcastically] Thank you, Mama. That's cheered us up no end.
- [Matthew is listening to a song on the new gramophone. Mary joins him]
- Lady Mary Crawley: I don't know this one.
- Matthew Crawley: Actually I rather like it. I think it was in a show that flopped. "Zip Goes a Million" or something.
- [Matthew holds out his arms. He and Mary start to dance]
- Lady Mary Crawley: Can you manage without your stick?
- Matthew Crawley: You *are* my stick.
- Lady Mary Crawley: *We* were a show that flopped.
- Matthew Crawley: God, Mary, I'm so, so sorry. You know how sorry I am.
- Lady Mary Crawley: Don't be. It wasn't anyone's fault. If it was, it was mine.
- Matthew Crawley: You know Cousin Violet came to me. Told me to marry you.
- Lady Mary Crawley: When was this?
- Matthew Crawley: A while ago. When we knew I would walk again.
- Lady Mary Crawley: Classic Granny. What did you say?
- Matthew Crawley: That I couldn't accept Lavinia's sacrifice of her life, her children, her future, and then give her the brush-off when I was well again. Well, I couldn't, could I?
- Lady Mary Crawley: Of course not.
- Matthew Crawley: How ever much I might want to.
- Lady Mary Crawley: Absolutely not.
- [Matthew and Mary kiss tenderly as they continue to dance slowly]
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: I used to think Mary's beau was a mésalliance, but compared to this he's positively a Hapsburg.
- Jane Moorsum: [as he appears to offer her a piece of paper or his man in town after she tells him she intend to resign] You don't owe me anything.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: It's not for you; it's for Freddie. Let me give him a start in life.
- Jane Moorsum: I'm not sure.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: It would make me very happy.
- Jane Moorsum: If I thought that, then I'd take it gladly.
- Jane Moorsum: [after a pause Robert nods affirmatively] Will you be happy?... Will you?
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: I have no right to be unhappy, which is almost the same...
- Jane Moorsum: Almost. Not quite.
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Would someone please tell me what's going on, or have we all stepped through the looking glass?
- Mrs. Patmore: [after rejecting Thomas's offer of help] Oooh, it's wonderful what fear can do to the human spirit.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: [referring to Sybil] She's a wonderful nurse and she's worked very hard, but in the process she's forgotten who she is.
- Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham: Has she, Robert, or have we overlooked who she really is?
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: I suppose you'll be going to Dublin now?
- Lady Sybil Crawley: In a day or two. Mama is well again and I see no reason to delay. Though I do wish we could have parted friends.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: Do you wish to part friends?
- Tom Branson: I do. Though I don't expect it.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: All right.
- Lady Sybil Crawley: What?
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: Well, if I can't stop you I see no point in a quarrel. It'll be a very different life to the one you might have had but if you're sure it's what you want.
- Lady Sybil Crawley: I am.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: Then you may take my blessing with you. Whatever it may mean.
- Lady Sybil Crawley: Oh, Papa! It means more than anything! More than anything!
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: If you mistreat her, I will personally have you torn to pieces by wild dogs.
- Tom Branson: I'd expect nothing less.
- Lady Sybil Crawley: Will you come over for the wedding?
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: We'll see, we'll talk about that later. And there'll be some money but not much.
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: [ref.to Lavinia Swire's tiny frame] She's so slight a real necklace would flatten her.
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: What on earth is it?
- Lavinia Swire: A gramophone. Some cousins of mine have given it to us.
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: You should stand well clear when you light the blue touch paper.
- Matthew Crawley: [jokingly to Isobel as Matthew leans for support on Lavinia] She's just sucking up, Mother.
- Lavinia Swire: [good-naturedly] Any bride who doesn't suck up to her husband's mother is a fool.
- Lady Mary Crawley: Can you manage without your stick?
- Matthew Crawley: [leaning on Mary while alluding to his cane] You *are* my stick.
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: [despairing] God Almighty, how can this be? My whole life gone over a cliff in the course of a single day!
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: Now, Sybil, dear, this sort of thing is all very well in novels, but in reality, it can prove very uncomfortable. And while I am sure Branson has many virtues...
- Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham: [Robert looks at her in shock]
- Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: [Puts her hand up to prevent Robert from interrupting] Well, no, no... he's a good driver.
