November 1918. Believing her marriage to have been a sham, Daisy is reluctant to accept a widow's pension whilst Robert writes to the father of Ethel's child, only to learn that he was killed in the war. As the Armistice is announced a Canadian soldier, suffering terrible burns, comes to recuperate and declares that he is Patrick, the heir presumed dead on the 'Titanic' and until recently an amnesiac. Only Edith believes him. Carlisle plans to buy a house near Downton and poaches Carson as his butler. He also notes Mary's devotion to Matthew and threatens to expose her affair unless she proves a loyal wife. The war is quickly coming to a close. Isobel would like Downton Abbey to remain open as a rehabilitation center. Not everyone in the family agrees. A badly burned new patient by the name of Patrick Gordon arrives to recover from his wounds. Lady Edith takes a liking to him but is shocked when he claims to be Patrick Crawley, heir to Downton Abbey and the title, who was supposed to have died in the sinking of the Titanic. Robert Crawley is disbelieving. Daisy isn't comfortable taking a widows pension. Sir Richard Carlisle asks Carson to be the butler for he and Lady Mary as they now plan on purchasing the nearby 12,000-acre Haxby Park estate. Lady Cora decides to take up Ethel's cause and writes to the parents of the officer who fathered her baby only to learn that their son has died. Lady Sybil and Branson realize that with the end of the war so close, they will have to begin making plans.
