Storyline

November 1918. Believing her marriage to have been a sham, Daisy is reluctant to accept a widow's pension whilst Robert writes to the father of Ethel's child, only to learn that he was killed in the war. As the Armistice is announced a Canadian soldier, suffering terrible burns, comes to recuperate and declares that he is Patrick, the heir presumed dead on the 'Titanic' and until recently an amnesiac. Only Edith believes him. Carlisle plans to buy a house near Downton and poaches Carson as his butler. He also notes Mary's devotion to Matthew and threatens to expose her affair unless she proves a loyal wife. John returns from a meeting with Vera in London, with a cut on his face. Trivia

When Patrick Gordon tells Lady Edith about his time in Canada after the Titanic sank, he mentions having been part of "Princess Pat's regiment". The regiment he's referring to is the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. It was named in honour of Princess Patricia of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and a very popular public figure in Canada. See more »

Goofs

When Robert announces the armistice he says it will take effect on the morning of the 11th. At least a day passes before the household gathers to mark the end of hostilities. The armistice was not signed and announced until around 5:00 on the morning of the 11th so it would have taken effect only hours after it was announced. Also, the armistice was scheduled for 11:00 am Paris time. It would have been 10:00 in England. See more »

A ghost comes back
21 December 2017 | by See all my reviews

Carson is offered by Sir Richard Carlisle to work for him and his fiancée Lady Mary in their would-be new home. A wounded soldier, whose face is unrecognizable because of scars, claims that he is Patrick Crawley. Edith believes him, but the others are suspicious. Is he the real deal or simply an impostor?

To be honest, I did not like the storyline of this "Patrick Crawley". It is far-fetched and unrealistic, I think.

But well, this is still a good episode. The ending is shocking.
