- Derek Morgan: [voiceover] poet Antonio Porchia wrote, "Man, when he does not grieve, hardly exists."
- Aaron Hotchner: I'm supposed to be asking how you're doing.
- David Rossi: I've always had troubles letting people in. But this is different. I guess I've come to realize I'm more married to this team than I ever was to three ex-wives.
- Aaron Hotchner: The assessment's routine. I asked her to let me do it rather than bring in somebody from the outside.
- Derek Morgan: So, let me guess, it's about the five stages of grief. You want to figure out where we all are. All right. Denial. I'm fine, this can't be happening to me. Well, it didn't happen to me, did it? So, that rules that out. What else is there? Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. Well, obviously I haven't accepted it, otherwise I wouldn't be in here. So, where does that leave me?
- Aaron Hotchner: Angry.
- Derek Morgan: Angry. Yeah. Yes, sometimes I feel like I want to quit my job and spend my time chasing down the son of a bitch who killed Emily. You're damn right, I'm angry.
- Penelope Garcia: Florida's a stand-your-ground state.
- Dr. Spencer Reid: Castle Doctrine based on English common law that allows homeowners to use deadly force to protect their land.
- Penelope Garcia: Yeah, it's a highfalutin way of saying that the gun laws are lax at best. After the 2008 elections, the Floridians were nervous about losing their second amendment rights, and gun sales shot through the roof, pun intended.
- Aaron Hotchner: She brought bullets from home and came in unarmed?
- David Rossi: Access to the ammo but not the weapon. So, she knew what gun to ask for.
- Aaron Hotchner: So she comes to the counter, asks for the .38, he gives her a permit application.
- David Rossi: Which she doesn't fill out.
- Chief Theirs: But there's a three-day waiting period.
- David Rossi: Maybe she's got a record, knows she won't pass the background.
- Aaron Hotchner: Or there's something about today and she can't wait.
- David Rossi: So she discretely loads it, goes to leave, they stop her, not realizing it's loaded.
- Chief Theirs: But if it's just a gun she wants, why kill all these guys?
- Aaron Hotchner: They were in the way.
- Chief Theirs: Thanks for coming.
- David Rossi: Agent Rossi. This is Agent Hotchner.
- Aaron Hotchner: Morning.
- Chief Theirs: Good morning. The store was only open a few minutes when this went down.
- David Rossi: Hell of a way to start the day.
- Shelley Chamberlain: This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
- Chief Theirs: It would appear four shots fired from generally this position. Four dead.
- Aaron Hotchner: Proficient. She comes in with a gun and she gets all the way to the counter without attracting attention?
- David Rossi: Was this case unlocked when you got here?
- Chief Theirs: We haven't touched a thing.
- David Rossi: There seems to be a .38 revolver missing.
- Chief Theirs: And two .38 rounds on the floor, and all the ammo is still locked up.
