Franco Moon (2008)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Another delightful featurette with director Jess Franco. This time he discusses his 1981 slasher BLOODY MOON, a Spanish production that was clearly meant to cash in on the various slashers that were making a killing at the box office. With his comments it's rather clear that Franco wasn't too fond of the film or its production. He starts off talking about the various lies the producers told him including one where they said Pink Floyd was going to do the music. Seriously, can you imagine a Jess Franco movie with Pink Floyd doing the soundtrack? Franco talks about how he wanted to get humor into the film and why he felt that too much gore wasn't a good thing and how it could build any type of suspense. Those who have seen BLOODY MOON will remember the opening sequence, which heavily borrows from HALLOWEEN but Franco sadly never mentions if he had seen that film, been influenced by it or any of the other American slashers out there. He does bring up the Nicole Kidman films THE OTHERS as being a good example where less is more. Franco also discusses why horror and porn have so much in common but this goes back to the less is more thought. At 17-minutes Franco manages to go through a wide range of topics including THE AWFUL DR. ORLOFF and the special effects used in the film. A funny bit happens at the start when Lina Romay is saying goodbye and walking out of the house as they're about to interview Jess.
