What if you could change the outcome of your life?
27 January 2015 | by (Australia) – See all my reviews

The basic premise of 'Tatami Galaxy' centers around a college student (unnamed, but credited as 'Watashi') who relives his last two years over and over again to try out different social clubs (film, English, cycling, etc.) so that he can have a "rose colored campus life" and attain a relationship with a "raven haired maiden". Sounds pretty straightforward, but this anime is anything but.

The series is episodic, with each episode following a different campus life for the protagonist, but with him always meeting the scheming Ozu, who sabotages his plans and involves him (often unwillingly) in other strange, but humorous situations, leading him to want to start over again and change his outcome.

Everything about this anime is unusual, from the art style, with its strange color tones and shifting designs (even mixing in live action occasionally), to the eccentric but memorable cast that features a fortune teller, a demigod of love, a film student in love with a doll, heath food cultists, and the protagonist's own libido, among others.

The rapid-fire narration and kinetic editing really add a sense of style and energy to the show, separating it from typical anime school romance shows. I had to pause and reverse several times each episode just keep up with the subtitles and take in all the details in the visuals on display. Which isn't a wholly bad thing considering how very entertaining the anime is.

The animation is superb, always smooth and flowing, oozing with character; the music is very memorable as well mixing both classical and modern electronic styles, while remaining fresh and original throughout the shows eleven episodes.

I wont spoil anything, but the ending perfectly ties all the themes of the show together, and I couldn't ask for a better resolution.

My only reason for giving the show a nine is because of the fast narration which could throw off new viewers. But stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a very original and insightful viewing experience from director Masaaki Yuaka ('Kaiba', 'Mind Game'), one of the most original talents working in anime today.
