Not a film to be obsessed with...
TheLittleSongbird3 March 2013
Obsession or A Trusted Man is not completely irredeemable. It is not too bad to look at, and Charisma Carptenter, Gemma Martini and Nicholas Lea's performances are decent. But it is a largely bad and forgettable movie. While the actors do what they can, they don't have much to work with. Their characters are underdeveloped clichés and I found myself more annoyed with rather than able to identify with them. The dialogue flows awkwardly from one line to the next, and some of those lines are either cheesy and ones that we've heard to exhaustion. The pacing is lifeless and meandering, and unfortunately it never recovers, and while the direction does nothing to hurt how the film looks there is nothing that holds any kind of distinction or even life here. But what fared worst for Obsession was the story. It is one of those stories that you have seen so many times before, and done in such a draggy and non-suspenseful fashion, that you know exactly what's going to happen to each other and how the movie was going to end. Nothing makes sense either, there's far too many senseless parts here to really pick out the biggest offender in this regard, but Sebastian not calling the cops on the way to the warehouse, the cop knowing about the warehouse without having been there and Sonia not finding it peculiar how he came out in the middle of nowhere are certainly at the top of the list.

All in all, forgettable, predictable and senseless movie compensated by some decent acting and that it didn't look cheap. 3/10 Bethany Cox

A Trusted Man
hopefulauthor-824-58469910 February 2013
A Trusted Man is one of the worse movies I'd ever seen. After a 2-year relationship, Sonia tells her boyfriend, Tom, she got a work promotion, accepted, and planned on relocating. Just up and go. Being female, I believe women are free to do as they please, but in a long-term affair, at the minimum, attempt to resolve an issue. I do not condone Tom's actions, but when two people are in love, or one spouse assumes his/her partner loves him/her, is it not normal to sit down and discuss options? I mean, two-years?? The same applies to men. It doesn't take the FBI to figure out who's doing the stalking. Minutes after watching A Trusted Man, I figured out the ending. Trusted Man is non-Challenging. Non-Suspense. Seems to me the screen-writer, attempted putting a story together, without much contemplation.

One of the worst movies in the last few years
istvan-barta-jr2 March 2013
Here we go. The storyline is so linear that it makes the movie hard to watch. You always know what the next steps will be. No surprises there. All the turns of events can be predicted, somewhat looks like the screenplay was written in a way to make it easy to understand even for the family dog. Note that we are talking about a thriller!!! Where is the thrill, the suspense, the biting of your fingernails?! Seriously! There are a number of points where you know that in real life this and that cannot/would never happen. And these all happen at moments that are crucial for the storyline. So bottom line: Don't waste your time with this movie. I can't believe I am actually wasting time on typing up this review... just wanted to spare you the disappointment.

Bland and Predictable
carolynocean14 August 2021
This woman is not very good when it comes to decision making.

Firstly , she decides to accept a job offer which requires her to relocate to another city , even though she is in a 2 year relationship with boyfriend Tom. Now, call me old fashioned but, I do think that is a little hasty and inconsiderate ??

Secondly , she walks into an art gallery looking to purchase a piece to decorate her new apartment, and is quickly talked into buying a painting which a child could have produced in play school!!!!!

And she paid 1400 hundred dollars for it , What ????

Does this woman ever stop to think ?

So , based on what I saw from the start of this movie, I am not rating it well .

It continued to be both predictable and not very exciting .

I saw it through to the end , but , really , if you are planning on watching this, just don't expect to be thrilled .

Badly Written
decemberangel128616 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is just as bad as a movie I saw with Bianca Lawson in House of Secrets neither man wanted to see their mates move on. A trusted man is badly written and badly acted. a trusted man never should have been written, the script is so bad it should have written, bad acting job, bad acting cast. The only good actress was Charisma Carpenter and the lines were so terrible it wasn't funny. I shut the movie off after an hour and twenty minutes into the movie, I caught the last 5 minutes of it who wouldn't figure out that her ex boyfriend was working on making her life miserable. Charisma should of broken off the relationship with Tom long before her promotion but he should have understood her job and understood her.

Nightmare in Boston
lavatch8 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"A Trusted Man" (a.k.a., "Obsession") is a well-crafted thriller with a villain that is cold, heartless, and relentless.

Sonia Paston has just received a terrific promotion from Celadon Technologies, and she will be transferred from New York to Boston to lead the team on the Jupiter launch. But the move doesn't set well with her boyfriend, Tom Doherty, a New York cop who follows Sonia to Boston after she broke up with him.

Tom uses all of the tricks of the trade to stalk and torment Sonia. When she begins a relationship with Sebastian Craig, a local art dealer, Tom becomes Sebastian's tormentor as well. Sonia's home is bugged by Tom, and all of her listening devices are being monitored. He is a smooth operator, who plans each of his moves with meticulous attention to detail.

The most chilling scene in the film occurs in the office of the therapist Dr. Connie Landon. The shrink believes that she has a new patient. But when Tom begins to tell his story, it slowly dawns on Dr. Landon that this is the man described to her by her patient, Sonia Paston. Because the doctor advised Sonia to break off ties to Tom, he has come to her office with a score to settle.

Although the climactic scene was somewhat predictable in a frenetic chase through an empty warehouse in Boston, the filmmakers nonetheless sustained good suspense. Before she had first moved to New York, Sonia had a traumatic experience when an intruder broke into her home in L.A. and terrified her. Through the dedication of Dr. Landon, Sonia had worked through her fear to get a fresh start on life. But nothing in her past could truly prepare her for the machinations of a boyfriend who would give a set of nightmares for the ages.

Who Can You Trust? ***
edwagreen12 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Sonia seems to have trouble with male relationships in this 2011 film.

When she accepts a promotion in another city, this ticks off her boyfriend, the latter happening to be a New York City police officer. This sets off a chain of a series of events which is absolutely shocking.

Her rejected boyfriend will go to any lengths to make sure that if he can't have Sonia, no one else will and that includes the psychiatrist who told her to move on with her life.

The rest of the film is devoted to how the police officer frames her new lover with the murder of the therapist. Problem here is that the police realize rather too quickly in the film that the perceived guilty guy isn't.
