April 1917. With John still absent, Isobel's butler Molesley makes a play for Anna but is rejected. Robert gets a new valet, shell-shocked ex-soldier Henry Lang, whilst William goes off to war. Edith learns to drive a tractor extremely well, and nearly succumbs to a kiss from the married farmer Mr. Drake. Sybil and Thomas work in the cottage hospital, where the latter begins to learn some humanity. At Isobel's suggestion - and to Violet's dismay - Downton Abbey is turned into a convalescent ward to ease the hospital's bed shortage. Mary invites middle-aged newspaper tycoon, and prospective beau, Sir Richard Carlisle to a dinner party, also attended by the Crawleys and Lavinia. Suspicious of Carlisle, Violet invites her daughter and sister to the Earl, Lady Rosamund, who is intrigued by the fact that Carlisle and Lavinia already seem well-acquainted. Carson, despite being taken ill whilst serving dinner, is still perceptive enough to suggest to Mary that Matthew is really the man for ... Written by don @ minifie-1

We are shown Mr Lang as someone who is so ravaged by shell shock that's his hands shake so much he cannot replace the screw-on lid of a brass polish can. Yet the next time we see him, he's sewing by hand such an intricate stitch that those around him are amazed at his fine honed skill. If he was unable to screw on the lid of a can, how could he possibly manage to hand sew like a professional tailor. See more »

Lady Mary Crawley: [referring to Carson] He gave me some advice last night.
Anna: Was it good advice?
Lady Mary Crawley: He thinks I should say what I really feel.
Anna: Sounds a bit wild for Mr. carson. Do you think he's right?
Lady Mary Crawley: Well, they say that honesty's the best policy. I think you regret being honest less often than you regret telling lies.

Isobel Crawley suggests to turn Downton Abbey into a convalescent home for the wounded soldiers. Richard Carlisle, a "rich and powerful" suitor of Lady Mary, visits. Carson works very hard to keep Downton Abbey perfect and spotless. We also meet the new valet, Mr. Lang.

I love this episode, it is better than the previous one. Also, Lady Mary is likeable here. I really also feel sorry for Lady Edith.

I really do not know much about history, but it is really amazing that this show is very informative to show us accurately what happened during one of the most important times of history and at the same time, tell us a beautiful story of the characters.
