A Kinder, Gentler SNL
6 March 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

It has been a long time since I sat down & watched much of an SNL live. Usually in recent times I have had to employ the means of watching them via on demand. Still, the on-demand ones seem to be just composed of sketches. There is a flavor set by the live factor & the host that decides how things will go.

Miley Cyrus set the tone here, and compared to the original 1975 start of the series, this episode is rather Luke warm milk toast. The main subjects of humor seemed to be Disney which doesn't own NBC obviously, a few mild shots of Kadafi, and some pretty decent week-end update humor with the devil getting his due & shots in. I do like Seth Meyers doing UpDate as he does have some genuine straight man quality with humor like Chevy Chase did years ago. Keenan Thompson has excellent talent as I recognized back when he was doing work with Kel.

When you compare the humor here with the old days, it is a softer type, at least this installment. I remember Ford, Carter, Reagen, Bush, Clinton being on the barbecue every week. This installment had nothing about Obama but then there is little to laugh about with him or NBC's censors have a hands off policy in place? There was no humor about gasoline prices, but then I am not sure what is funny about them anyhow. The problem is see with this installment is that there is no edgy humor. There is some generation gap humor with Myley & the mock up of Billy Ray Cyrus, but that type of humor dates to the 1960's and closes out of town except on NBC.

At least The Strokes had their music there & were performing it live I hope though SNL has done some clever lip sync-hing over the years. The promo for next weeks host shows promise, but then it is always next week that keeps us coming back for more. This installment was less than the old days, less edgy, as maybe the NBC Censors are working overtime?
