International Newswire: Berlinale Receives Boost From Small-Screen Drama Series

In today’s International Newswire, how the Berlin Film Festival has received a boost from drama series, the Nordic countries seek to encourage more films to travel across the region, Sony creates a free-to-air crime channel in the U.K., and President Trump’s former adviser Roger Stone is to speak at Oxford University.

What recent Berlinale title has proved the most popular with audiences? One candidate: “Babylon Berlin,” presented as a project three years ago. It’s also of course a TV series. The ability of high-end TV drama to deliver sophisticated fiction to millions worldwide is in sharp contrast to most art films. It explains not only directors’ diaspora to the small-screen format but the increasing punch of TV dramas at major festivals worldwide. The Berlinale is no exception. Featuring world or international premieres of first episodes, Berlinale Series opens with one weighty title, Australian drama “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” starring Nathalie Dormer,

Writers Guild Foundation and Stephens College Mfa Hosting Town Hall On Female Entrepreneurship

Town hall panelist Fatimah Ashgar: Instagram

Thanks to #MeToo, there’s been plenty of online discourse about the way women are treated in Hollywood and beyond. However, there hasn’t been as much public in-person discussion, which The Writers Guild and Stephens College Mfa are hoping to rectify with Empires of Their Own: An Industry Town Hall. Scheduled for January 12, the town hall will invite its panelists to “talk about entrepreneurship in Hollywood through the female lens.”

“While the immediacy of social media is offering a speed of change only dreamed about a decade ago, it can also leave us feeling isolated and at sensory overload before breakfast,” the event’s webpage observes. “We would like to offer our community a chance to gather and process together.”

Empires of Their Own will be moderated by performer and “How I Wrote That” podcast host Khanisha Foster. The town hall’s panelists

Oliver Queen Is Back In The Hood In Arrow 6×07 Promo Images

Arrow season 6 has seen a major shake-up of the series’ status quo. With his duties already split between being mayor of Star City and a father to his son William, Oliver Queen passed the mantle of Green Arrow onto his old buddy John Diggle back in episode 2. It’s been a bumpy ride for him, though, as the former soldier has been struggling to deal with both adjusting to being Team Arrow’s new leader and coping with his Ptsd after the events of the season 5 finale.

In next week’s episode, titled “Thanksgiving,” the real Green Arrow will return when Oliver Queen is forced to don the hood once again. It’s not clear exactly what prompts him to step back into active vigilante duty, but it’s likely that it has something to do with the return of Black Siren, Laurel Lance’s evil doppelganger from Earth-2, who

“Empire” Showrunner Ilene Chaiken Has Two Women-Centric Shows in the Works at Fox

Ilene Chaiken: Entertainment Weekly/YouTube

Ilene Chaiken is putting the contract she re-upped this summer to good use. The “Empire” showrunner, writer, and Ep is penning two new series for Fox, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. One is a medical drama with a script plus significant penalty commitment that’s being compared to “This Is Us,” and the other follows an FBI agent and has a put pilot commitment.

“Triage,” the medical drama, “follows two women’s lives during three distinct periods: in 2008, when they’re surgery interns at Stanford, and in 2018 and 2028, as they explore cutting-edge medical techniques and face both professional and personal challenges,” THR summarizes. “But despite many obstacles, their epic friendship is the one constant in each other’s lives they can count on.”

Chaiken is adapting “Triage” from consulting producer David Cornue’s material. She will also exec produce alongside Jenna Santoianni, Courtney Hazlett, Tom Lesinski, David Ellender, and Steven Marrs. Sonar Entertainment and OutEast Entertainment are producing with 20th Century Fox TV.

The other series, “Mrs. Otis Regrets,” “centers on FBI Special Agent Clementine Otis — wife, mother, patriot — who is in the midst of investigating a domestic terrorism threat when an affair with a prominent government official shatters her life and career at the Bureau. While her former lover endures little blowback from the revelation, Otis is publicly shamed and loses her job, her reputation, her credibility, potentially her family, and even her access to the one person that could help her thwart a huge violent incident.”

Chaiken created “Mrs. Otis Regrets” with Melissa Scrivner-Love (“Person of Interest”). Both will Ep the series with the woman who inspired “Scandal,” Judy Smith. 20th TV is producing.

Best known as the creator of “The L Word,” Chaiken also exec produced, wrote for, and occasionally directed the pioneering Showtime series about a tight-knit group of lesbians in Los Angeles. She’s also set to Ep the “L Word” reboot that’s in the works.

Chaiken penned the original script for “The Handmaid’s Tale” for Showtime. The adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel ended up going to Hulu, and Bruce Miller rewrote the script and took on showrunning duties. Chaiken is still credited as an executive producer on the critically-acclaimed feminist series but is not directly involved in its creative development.

Reality showThe Real L Word: Los Angeles,” Showtime doc “L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin,” and ABC drama“Black Box” are among Chaiken’s other credits.

Season 4 of “Empire” airs Wednesdays on Fox.

The Most Shocking, Grisly and Heartbreaking Deaths on TV — IndieWire Critics Survey

The Most Shocking, Grisly and Heartbreaking Deaths on TV — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What’s the most memorable death — scripted please! — you’ve seen on TV? It could be disturbing, crazy, heartbreaking, etc. Old and current shows fair game.

Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com

I can’t seem to scrape the death of Charlie in the Season 3 finale of “Lost” from my mind — I can remember every part of that scene so many years later. There was something about the way the scene was written and shot that was just perfect, and even though it was the perfect time to say goodbye to the character, it was still hard to let him go. Charlie died a hero, dudes. Driveshaft forever!

Sterling K. Brown Finally Has Hollywood’s Attention, and He’s Eager to Pay It Forward
When Sterling K. Brown won the Emmy this year for his starring role in “This Is Us,” the actor felt a weight beyond the statue’s own six pounds.

“There was some heft on it,” Brown said. “When it was brought to my attention that it had been 19 years since an African-American had won in the category, and 16 years since an African-American had been nominated in the category, I was like, ‘Wow. This is sort of historical.’ It does have this feeling that, to quote ‘Hamilton,’ ‘History has its eyes on you.'”

Next up, he’s on the inaugural roster for the first-ever IndieWire Honors, which aims to recognize talent who thrive thanks to their own creative independence. And Brown isn’t taking his own rise lightly.

“As the needle moves and opportunities come, the opportunity to create opportunities for other people is also arising,” he said. “And that
