‘The Voice’ Season Premiere: New Coaches Show Off Chemistry, Competitiveness

19 September 2014 8:01 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBC’s “The Voice” kicks off its seventh season on Monday, Sept. 22, and Variety was among a number of outlets to get a sneak preview of the two-hour premiere, which showcases some of the best vocalists the competition has discovered to date — including a performance that Blake Shelton described as “the best country audition” he’s ever seen.

Back in August, the coaches and producer Mark Burnett gave a press conference to preview the new season, with Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams joining the panel alongside Shelton and fellow mainstay Adam Levine.

The season premiere deftly demonstrates the easy chemistry that the four coaches share, with Stefani and Williams confidently claiming their revolving chairs — previously occupied by Christina Aguilera, Shakira, CeeLo Green and Usher — as if they’ve been with the show since the very beginning.

ABC Orders Mark Burnett Game Show ‘500 Questions’ Straight to Series

18 September 2014 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ABC has given a direct-to-series order to “500 Questions,” an event game show that reteams reality competition king Mark Burnett with Warner Bros. unscripted and alternative television president Mike Darnell.

“500 Questions,” which is the show’s working title, is scheduled to air in 2015 and has the vaguely described premise that it is an “genius game show” that will test the “smarts — and nerve — of contestants in a pressure-packed, incredibly intense environment.”

It is exec produced by Burnett and his One Three Media (“Shark Tank,” “Survivor,” “The Voice”) and Warner Horizon Television (“The Voice,” “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette,” “Bachelor in Paradise”).

“I love this show. It (‘500 Questions’) is the first network game show to combine what audiences love about serialized unscripted hits with a huge game show event. It has ongoing characters and huge stakes,” said Burnett.

The series order continues ABC’s relationship with Burnett, who executive produces the network’s “Shark Tank. »

A dozen years after launching “Last Call,” Carson Daly’s profile at NBC continues to grow. In addition to the latenight series and the net’s annual New Year’s Eve festivities, he also is a fixture on the “Today” set. Of course, his biggest exposure these days is as host of “The Voice,” which returns to NBC on Sept. 22.

What did you learn from your MTV days on “Total Request Live?”

Trl” was live for an hour every day. It was great boot camp or training for “The Voice,” just how to handle any situation that could possibly come up in tough circumstances — like teenage girls screaming, musicvideos playing and guests dropping by. It was great training for the ‘Today” show, too.
