'The Voice': Can't Beat the Lovin'
24 February 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Don't let the title fool you. The appeal of NBC's singing contest series, "The Voice," isn't in the music, although the music is what brung us to the dance, as they say in the trade. It's the coaches, stupid. The warmth that exudes from the four judges who morph into coaches as the competition narrows is worth the price of admission. The series, which begins its sixth season this week, uses a panel of four coaches who critique the artists' performances, then, if the singers are chosen, guides them as part of their particular "team of selected artists" through the remainder of the season. The coaches also compete to ensure that one of their acts wins the competition, giving them bragging rights for the season. The music can be grand (and sometimes, not so), but the series really is a joy to watch because of those four pooh-bahs _ Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Usher and Shakira (and Cee Lo Green and Christine Aguilera in previous years). Sure, it's a supreme kick to watch singers finally strut their stuff on a national stage, especially for those shower-singers among us who've convinced ourselves that given the right opportunity, it's move over, Sinatra. Two things set this show apart from other "amateur" talent gigs. The sets and production values are phenomenal for performers who are just trying to break in (and director Alan Carter has a sixth sense in understanding how to use the wonderful glitz to highlight each individual performer). As host, Carson Daly couldn't be better, especially in interacting with the talent and their families, gladly losing his objectivity each and every time. He's a joy, a throwback to the great emcees of TV's yesteryear, in the very best sense. But the fascination comes in watching the professional singers, these judges, gently work with these possible superstars of tomorrow from the git-go, from the moment they finish singing (and possibly don't make it but come back to next year, and do) to the time they get down to rehearsing in the studio. Guest artists like Cher are pulled in to help the coaches at this juncture, and to listen and watch is to fully understand that stardom is no accident, nor as easy as it looks. Based on the original "The Voice of Holland," the concept of the series is to find new singing talent (solo or duets) contested by aspiring singers, age 15 or over, drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by viewers by voting through telephone, Internet, SMS text, and iTunes Store purchases of artists' performances. They receive $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group for winning the competition. There have been five winners of the show to date: Javier Colon, Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope, Danielle Bradbery, and Tessanne Chin. America's version of "The Voice" first aired on April 26, 2011, as a Spring TV season program. The show proved to be a hit for NBC and was subsequently expanded into the fall cycle when season three premiered on September 10, 2012. This is a great show, not so different, really, from what your parents and grandparents grew up with in TV's infancy. Proving, once again, that entertainment is about the basics, and those, thank goodness, never change.
