Daniel is upset over the results of his cricket match where he he feels the team led by Lawrence Jupp won by cheating. The women around him think he is raising the results of a simple game to that of a Greek tragedy but he persists. Minnie suggests that they just have another match to settle it all. They are a player short, however, with Thomas Brown away, and recruit Alf and Edmund Timmins, but they're not quite up to the mark. There is one person in Candleford who seems to be expert with the bat but the rules may prevent that person from playing. Daniel is so obsessed with cricket that Laura can't possibly interest him in the two very old tombstones she found in the wood. She sets out to find a bit of history on those buried there. Gabriel is acting mysteriously, observing the men working in the fields at Lark Rise.- Written by garykmcd
