Sony, Discovery Ink Home Entertainment Pact (Exclusive)

London — Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Discovery Communications have inked a multi-year physical home entertainment distribution pact for Discovery’s catalog and future release slate. Beginning this fall, Sphe will distribute Discovery content on physical formats for the home entertainment marketplace throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Discovery’s upcoming release slate includes “Racing Extinction,” a politically-charged documentary from the Oscar-winning director of “The Cove,” Louie Psihoyos, as well as “Bear Grylls: Breaking Point,” in which the survival expert takes ordinary people on a journey to face their fears, and “Manhunt,” which pits former Navy Seal Joel Lambert against some of the world’s most-experienced hunting and tracking units.

Additional releases will include returning franchises such as “Through the Wormhole,” “Deadliest Catch” and “How the Universe Works.”

Jonathan Hewes to Become CEO of Mentorn Media, Pioneer Productions

Leading U.K. independent production group Tinopolis has appointed Wall to Wall’s Jonathan Hewes as CEO of Mentorn Media and Pioneer Productions.

Hewes will be responsible for the day-to-day running of both production companies, and will report jointly to Arwel Rees, CEO of the Tinopolis Group, and John Willis, creative director of the Tinopolis Group and chairman of Mentorn Media. Stuart Carter, founder of Pioneer Productions, is stepping down from his role as chairman of the company.

Hewes has worked at Wall to Wall for 20 years, where he held senior roles as head of factual programs, creative director, deputy chief executive, and most recently head of international. He was involved in the development and production of a wide range of the company’s programming for broadcasters around the world, including all of the major U.K. broadcasters, National Geographic Channel, PBS, HBO and Discovery.
