The Opening Night Selection for the 2017 New York Film Festival is Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying”

13 June 2017 3:32 AM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie, »

Steven Spielberg Pentagon Papers Drama Gets 2017 Oscar Season Release

22 April 2017 10:27 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Steven Spielberg’s untitled Pentagon Papers drama announced itself as a major awards season contender in this year’s Oscars race.

The film, which is rumored to star Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, will open in limited release on December 22, 2017. It will expand nationwide on January 12, 2018, a week after the Golden Globes broadcast. Hanks will play hard-charging Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee, with Streep handling the role of iron-willed publisher Katharine Graham. The pair made the decision to publish a classified history of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War over the objections of the Nixon administration. Courageous journalist dramas have played nicely with Oscar voters — 2015’s “Spotlight” won Best Picture, while 2005’s “Good Night and Good Luck” and 1976’s “All the President’s Men” earned a bevy of nominations.

The opening slot puts the Spielberg film in the hunt for Academy Awards gold along with the likes of Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing, »

Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 3 Review: Bad Blood

6 March 2017 8:00 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Spine-tingling suspense is supposed to leave you breathless, uncertain of what's coming next.

Bates Motel Season 5 Episode 3 achieved that over and over again, as an insane game of cat and mouse began with Chick holding the cheese, urging Norman and Mother to make moves they'd find difficult without his presence.

If only we could leap onto one of the many time machines currently available on the telly to find out what in Hades is coming next.

I don't know what your thoughts were after watching, but here were mine:

Did that really happen? What just happened? I want more! Oh my God!!!

The action felt so intimate not only in that few characters were involved, but the material was moving beyond measure.

Reactions were all over the map, from being overjoyed at seeing Caleb alive, to wonder at how Chick was manipulating the situation with Norman's insanity so brilliantly, »

Just because a movie or a celebrity wins an Oscar, that doesn't mean the win was deserved. While the Academy Awards are seen as the capstone to awards season -- and one of the highest honors in the business -- we all know that stars and movies get snubbed or overlooked all the time.

What's worse is when we look back at what did win, and shake our heads in confusion and disbelief. So, with the 89th Academy Awards just around the corner, let's take a look back over the show's illustrious history at a few times the Academy voters clearly made a mistake.

Oscars: What Should Have Won – Good Night, and Good Luck. for Best Picture over Crash

21 February 2017 2:43 PM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Graeme Robertson on why Good Night, and Good Luck. should have won Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards…

The Oscars celebrating the best of 2005 are probably among the most controversial and divisive on record. For it was Paul Haggis’s race-based ensemble drama Crash that received the Best Picture trophy, beating the favourite to win Brokeback Mountain, and spending every minute since its win being repeatedly listed as among the worst films to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Now why Brokeback Mountain lost to what some regard as a mediocre film, we don’t fully know, with some accusing the Academy of homophobia in their decision-making or bowing to pressures from conservative groups horrified by the idea that some cowboys might have been gay.

However, I would argue that while Brokeback Mountain was perhaps deserving of the win, I feel that it was not the only contender more »

Actors Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott will be diving into the cutthroat world of Washington D.C. politics for House of Cards season 5, according to Entertainment Weekly. Netflix revealed the casting news at a press event in New York City yesterday, where a number of announcements were made about their upcoming shows.

No details about either of these two new characters have surfaced, but the stills above suggest that they’ll be on opposite sides of the political spectrum/Underwood-Conway presidential election.
