Moderately amusing creature mayhem.
2 February 2014 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

The self-aware and deliberately cheesy, CGI laden monster movie is pretty much standard issue for this day and age. And the overtly titled "Big Ass Spider" is no better or worse than most of them. The digital creature FX are actually not as bad as you might think, there are at least some decent laughs, and the cast manages to create a fair amount of goodwill. They make it possible to sit through this even though the movie is inevitably not without its tiresome moments. Ultimately, it's just not as funny as this viewer would have liked, but it does have some energy and a real gung-ho attitude on the part of the filmmakers, led by director & editor Mike Mendez.

There's some appeal in seeing two average Joes become the unlikely heroes. Greg Grunberg ("Hollow Man", "Star Trek" '09) is amiable exterminator Alex Mathis, who gets bitten by a brown recluse spider and goes to a hospital where he gets caught up in a crisis: a dead body that was housing a rapidly growing, aggressive, and hungry spider is mistakenly transported to this hospital and the spider of course gets loose. Alex makes the acquaintance of a security guard named Jose (Lombardo Boyar), who becomes his sidekick as he tries to assist the military in eliminating the problem of the rampaging arachnid.

There's some familiar faces in the supporting cast: Ray Wise is fun as the frustrated Army major who, refreshingly, is not portrayed as a one dimensional villain. Patrick Bauchau is exposition provider Dr. Lucas. And there are some delightful cameos by Troma boss Lloyd Kaufman and especially Lin Shaye. There are some very attractive female cast members on hand, in particular Clare Kramer as the majors' young associate.

There's a respectable body count here as well as an acceptable amount of utter destruction as the Big Ass Spider lays waste to downtown L.A. Overall, fans of such movies as this - and people should know what they're in for, judging by the title - may find this diverting enough if not of any real distinction.

Six out of 10.
