Warner Bros. could sue Universal over the Dark Universe name

1 June 2017 1:48 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Warner Bros. are considering the option of suing their rival studio Universal over their Dark Universe.

Universal’s new Dark Universe is set to bring together a connected world of classic movie monsters, including the upcoming film The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, which will also feature an appearance by Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Universal are hoping for big things from their new shared universe, with lofty aims of matching the success achieved by outfits like Marvel and DC.

But an interesting development has recently come to light. Buried deep in a Hollywood Reporter feature on the project is the news that Warner Bros are reportedly “mulling legal action” regarding the name Dark Universe, as this is the working title for an upcoming Dceu Justice League Dark movie.

Emmy Contenders 2017: Lead Actress in a Comedy

1 June 2017 12:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Julia Louis-Dreyfus set a record last year when she won her fifth consecutive Emmy for playing the titular “Veep,” and is a lock for a sixth nomination (if not a win) this year. Only three other former nominees are eligible this year: Tracee Ellis Ross, coming off a Golden Globe win for “Black-ish”; Ellie Kemper, always upbeat on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; and Lily Tomlin, a beloved performer, for “Grace and Frankie.” Tomlin’s co-star, two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda, shouldn’t be counted out of the running, particularly following a third season that may heralded as the show’s best yet. Also returning to some of the best reviews of her career was Lena Dunham for the final season of “Girls.” Throwing an interesting twist into the mix is Allison Janney’s choice to move from supporting to lead for “Mom,” a role that has already won her two trophies. Guest Actress in a Comedy: The Frontrunners and Dark Horses for 2017 Emmys

1 June 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

There are a lot of returning faces in the guest actress category. Look for multiple Emmy winners Christine Baranski and Laurie Metcalf to repeat in this category for their work as the mothers of leads Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki on “The Big Bang Theory” — Baranski already has four noms for the role, while Metcalf has one. Three of the four times Melissa McCarthy has hosted “SNL” has led to a nomination here, and this year she has the bonus of her impeccable Sean Spicer imitation. Elizabeth Banks has also been nominated in the category before for “Modern Family,” but she faces serious competition from other “Family” guests like Dot-Marie Jones and Jane Krakowski. Another show with great guests is “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which had turns by Laura Dern, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph and Amy Sedaris. And Carrie Fisher should lock a nod for her swan song on “Catastrophe.” Previous nominee Kristen Wiig had an entire episode »

Runaways co-creator Brian K. Vaughan shares his thoughts on the upcoming TV adaptation

1 June 2017 5:58 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Brian K. Vaughan, co-creator of Marvel’s The Runaways, has seen the pilot episode for the upcoming television adaptation, and has recently spoke to Cbr.com to give his thoughts on the pilot, and the project in general:

“I just did a little consulting early in the process, but I think the Runaways found the ideal ‘foster parents’ in Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. They took a weird comic set in the Marvel Universe of 2002 and lovingly adapted it into a stylish drama that feels like contemporary Los Angeles. Love the cast, crew and especially the writers they assembled. And the pilot looks like an Adrian Alphona comic! I can’t wait to watch this first season unfold.”

It is definitely a sigh of relief when the creator of any property gives an adaptation his/her blessing. Streaming proves once again to be the place for niche television. In a »

Check out the latest trailer for ‘The Glass Castle’

22 May 2017 1:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The movie that’s been in ‘talks’ for over five years finally sees a release date and a trailer for audiences to laud over. The Glass Castle first created hubbub in 2012 after Jennifer Lawrence’s name was attached to produce the film adaptation of Jeanette Walls’ novel.

With this being Lawrence’s first producing role, The Glass Castle is already seeing its popularity skyrocket after its trailer was released this weekend. The film, based off of Walls’ memoir of the same name, follows Walls’s dysfunctional upbringing, dealing with her abusive and alcoholic father and her aloof artist mother. Brie Larson stars as Jeannette Walls, with Naomi Watts playing her mother Rose Mary and Woody Harrelson playing her father Rex. Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously worked with Larson on Short Term 12, steps in as a writer and director for the film.

The trailer looks and grabs at one’s emotions almost immediately. »

Trailer Watch: Brie Larson Reunites with Her Dysfunctional Family in “The Glass Castle”

19 May 2017 8:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

The Glass Castle

Try as she might, Brie Larson can’t bury her past in a new trailer for “The Glass Castle.” The Oscar-winning actress stars as Jeannette, a woman who’s tried to distance herself from the dysfunctional, nomadic family she grew up in. But when her parents move to New York to be closer to her, she’s forced to deal with her feelings about how she was raised — and who she’s become.

“You shouldn’t be ashamed of us just because we choose a different lifestyle than you,” Jeannette’s mother, Rose Mary (Naomi Watts), tells her. While Jeannette grew up in poverty and dodging bill collectors, the trailer suggests that she’s upper-middle class now. But according to her mom, Jeannette’s lost her “sense of adventure” in the meantime — and she does seem to be embarrassed by her parents, who are squatting in an abandoned building while in NY. She’s clearly trying to avoid introducing her husband (Max Greenfield, “New Girl”), who grew up wealthy and works in finance, to them.

From her dad’s (Woody Harrelson) perspective, Jeannette should be more worried about how she’s choosing to live life now than trying to erase her past. “You were born to change the world, not just join the norms,” he says.

The Glass Castle” is based on Jeannette Walls’ 2005 best-selling memoir. Set to hit theaters August 11, the film reunites Larson with her “Short Term 12” director Destin Daniel Cretton.

The Mummy projected for $40 million-plus box office debut

19 May 2017 2:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Early tracking numbers suggest that The Mummy, the first entry in the Universal Monsters shared universe, will open with $40 million-plus during its debut weekend at the North American box office.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that two services close to the site’s sources placed the opening at $40 million and $42 million, not including international markets. While box office tracking isn’t always entirely accurate, it usually gives a ballpark estimate of what numbers a movie may be heading toward.

A $40 million debut would be decent (if perhaps slightly lower than ideal for Universal) and on par with that of 1999’s The Mummy and 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, two films from the previous Brendan Frasier-led incarnation of the franchise. Assuming that the film isn’t too top-heavy and at least gets a 2.5x multiplier, The Mummy would just barely climb over the coveted $100 million mark.
