Joe Swanberg’s ‘Digging for Fire’

31 August 2015 9:08 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

“Have I ever told you the story about the time I tried to find a dead body?”

Sounds like an ear catching anecdote, but in reality that’s the line that started Jake Johnson (New Girl, Jurassic World) and Joe Swanberg (Drinking Buddies, Happy Christmas) down the road which eventually led to Digging for Fire, a film that garnered a 2015 Sundance Film Festival premiere. Jake Johnson and costar Steve Berg (Drunk History, Skinwalker Ranch) have been on tour promoting the film with several Q & A’s across the country. Last Friday they brought their wit and a pitcher of beer to the front of the screen at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX.

“The way Joe (Swanberg) and I work is we just keep pitching each other ideas until one jumps out… I texted him one night and said, ‘Have I ever told you about the time I tried to find a dead body? »

Lynn Shelton is joining her former mumblecore collaborators, the Duplass brothers, at HBO.  The premium cable network has put into development "Family Drama," an anthology series to be executive produced by Shelton, Megan Griffiths and former "True Blood" Ep Gregg Fienberg. The Seattle-set show will follow a new family every season "as an explosive event or revelation rips open and exposes the family’s driving emotional flaw, forcing its members to finally confront and deal with each other," according to TheWrap. Shelton, whose TV directing credits include "New Girl," "The Mindy Project" and "Mad Men," would direct the pilot. The trio would also pen the series.   The filmmaker behind "Laggies," "Your Sister's Sister" and "Humpday" is also attached to helm the HBO miniseries "Madame X," a period drama about a controversial midwife to be played by Anna...

How President Kanye Saved the Video Music Awards: MTV, What's Good?

31 August 2015 8:32 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Hail to the chief — our future President Kanye West stole the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, announcing his beautiful dark twisted candidacy for Commander-in-Cheezus. "Yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided to run for President in 2020," he said, after a brilliantly rambling 10-minute-plus speech that had more music in it than any of the night's performances. Kanye's stoned Video Vanguard soliloquy ("we the Millennials, bro!") was this year's Vma highlight, as everybody knew it would be. The whole point of the bash every year is »

Emmys Celebrate Diversity in Primetime Television

Jason George took the stage at a crowded Montage Beverly Hills patio area Thursday evening to mark the celebration of diversity in the 67th Annual Emmy Award nominations. The patio was filled with attendees involved in showbiz — most of whom are considered a minority of some kind.

The third Dynamic & Diverse event from the TV Academy brought people from the industry old and new to celebrate the occasion. “Grey’s Anatomy” regular George, chair of SAG-aftra’s Diversity Advisory Committee, made a speech that touched on the “Empire” effect — or as he likes to call it, the “Shonda Rhimes” effect — that snowballed into the 2015-16 season having the most diverse television content in years.

“Diversity is good business,” he started. It was a statement that he had made last year before series “Black-ish” and “Fresh Off the Boat” premiered. He continued, “I don’t know if we can do ‘All in the Family »

2015 Pilot First Impressions: Fox’s Lucifer

To clarify, this article and the ones similar to it are not reviews of this fall/midseason’s pilots (because pilots can change a lot between now and when they broadcast). These are just my first impressions of the not-for-air network pilots that I have been able to screen. I last wrote about The CW’s Containment. Next up: Fox’s Lucifer, which premieres at midseason. The Premise: Based on the DC/Vertigo comic. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub, and begins assisting a skeptical detective on an investigation after a friend of his is murdered. The Cast: Tom Ellis (Merlin) as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German (Chicago Fire) as Detective Chloe Dancer, Db Woodside (24) as Amenadiel, Rachael Harris (SuitsNew Girl) as Kim Martin, Scarlett Estevez (The Massively Mixed-Up Middle School Mystery) as Trixie, »

The fifth season is the first not to welcome the inestimable talents of Jessica Lange, but the crop of talent lined up below should rush in to fill that gap.

Since its launch in November 2014, IFC’s Comedy Crib has served as a home for high-quality web series, some of which have caught our attention. Now, Comedy Crib has announced the shows that will make up its fall slate, and it has assembled a strong lineup. Leading off is Suburban Sons, a series produced by Above Average that stars Lamorne Morris of New Girl fame.

In Suburban Sons, Morris plays one of four dads who together make up a gang of suburban gangsters. However, instead of running a dangerous criminal syndicate, the Suburban Sons spend their time making sure local lawns are well-maintained. In the premiere episode, this process involves torturing a resistant neighbor by over-cooking hamburgers and sharing Breaking Bad spoilers.

Suburban Sons, which is sponsored by Hyundai and will debut its episodes across four consecutive Tuesdays, is one of at least eight series that will arrive on Comedy »

Ahead of its premiere at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival, Sony Pictures has snapped up distribution rights for Lorene Scafaria’s family drama, The Meddler.

Starring Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne and Whiplash star J.K. Simmons, Scafaria’s picture is a story of second chances and the universal draw of family members. Centering on Marnie Minervini (Sarandon), The Meddler will see our recent widow throw caution to the wind and uproot from her New Jersey home in order to spend more time with her daughter in Los Angeles.

Armed with little more than her wit and will – and a bank account packed to the rafters – Marnie plots course for the west coast, and early reviews have praised her performance as poignant and deeply resonant.

Here’s the official logline from the Tiff schedule.

Interview: Actor Jake Johnson on Evolving in ‘Digging for Fire’

20 August 2015 4:15 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Actor Jake Johnson is expanding his presence in movies, and much of that has to do with his collaboration with director – and Chicago native – Joe Swanberg. Johnson and Swanberg have teamed up for their second film, after the success of 2013’s “Drinking Buddies, and are listed as co-writers in “Digging for Fire.”

Digging for Fire” is a character study of Tim and Lee – portrayed by Jake Johnson and Rosemarie DeWitt – at some serious crossroads. They are in their thirties, have been married for a number of years and have a child, but both seemed stalled in the “is that all?” syndrome. When Lee’s wealthy client asks them to housesit, a series of events take place that separate them for a night, and allows them the freedom to explore some other possibilities. The film is filled with symbolic purpose, questions of life that are familiar to couples in that age range, »
